The above 19 CDs (three of them being in a box set) get you the best-sounding versions of 83 top 40 hits from 1978.
I should point out that there are many digital clones on the Time-Life CDs. In many cases, mastering engineer Dennis Drake applied a little EQ to tweak the sound from an existing CD. For instance, he tends to gently roll off some of the high end on the songs taken from Rhino's Disco Years. The differences are small, but in those cases, I give the nod to Dennis Drake's EQ'd clones.
I'll try an assemble another post for this thread showing where the cloned tracks came from. (Not that anyone really cares too much about this, but this seems like the most logical place on the entire web to post such info.)

Here's the mastering info. Dennis Drake mastered the Singers And Songwriters set and the Seventies Dance Party disc. No mastering engineer listed on AM Gold. I didn't list the Sounds Of The Seventies - 1978 and 1978: Take Two discs because I found few, if any, digital clones on them.
Tracks with a "?" are most likely taken from a CD I don't have, or (less likely) are fresh analog transfer.

Andrew Gold's "Thank You For Being A Friend" from Rhino's Have A Nice Day Vol. 24 is the 45 version.
Confused over the dj45 notation.
The commercial single I own has the 4:41 length on the label. But wasn't the short version "the" 45 version?
I know that the full length is or was available on a Chicken Soup For the Soul volume also on Rhino.

Barry Manilow seems very conspicuous by his absence.

I wholeheartedly recommend The Essential Barry Manilow (2005), which has all four of Barry's 1978 top 40 hits on it, and has fine sound for "Can't Smile Without You" and "Ready To Take A Chance Again".
For "Even Now", I preferred the sound on Time-Life's Body Talk - Just For You (1996).
For "Copacabana", I really didn't like the sound on Essential - it's too compressed and smiley-face EQ'd for my tastes. I didn't like the sound on Greatest Hits Vol. 2, either, because it's from a higher-generation tape. My version of choice, silly as it sounds, is from a rip of a CD I borrowed from a friend in college, and I can't for the life of me remember what CD it is! So much for accurate note-taking!

I was going to ask the same question. My promo & commercial 45s both have the same version despite the wrong time on the commercial one. Does anyone have a commercial 45 that runs 4:41 (or thereabouts), or one with the correct time listed?

I don't believe there were any long version commercial 45s of "Thank You For Being A Friend".
I am aware that in the case of "Lonely Boy" the vast majority of the commercial 45s were the longer, lamer LP mix (but some commercial copies of the shorter, punchier promo 45 mix did leak out).

I don't have the 45, so I used what was listed in the 1955-1996 book: (dj copies of this 45 ran (3:56); commercial copies were all (4:41))

Hey, it happens.
Of course, all of the CDs you mention have the long side of the 45 of "Copacabana." Of course, we're starting to find a few CDs that have the short side (which I'm more partial to myself).
Speaking of "Copacabana," was anyone able to verify whether the (4:06) version on the Madagascar 2 soundtrack is the Even Now vinyl LP version (which I do believe is mixed a little hotter and has an extra line that was snipped out of the short side of the 45)?
