my commercial 45 issued as arista 0675 states a run time on the label as 3:41 but actually runs 3:08...the 45 run time is noted in the db but the incorrect printed run time is not....

<a run time on the label as 3:41 but actually runs 3:08.>

This is so bizzarre to me and also makes me laugh. Virtually every Arista single has the wrong run time, and not just off by a few seconds but MANY songs, but in virtually every case, the time has been made to appear shorter, which to me is Clive Davis' attempt to get radio stations to play Arista's singles even though they're longer than he would like them to appear. Then, when he's finally presented with a 3:08 single, the run time is listed as 3:41! Go figure.

Gordon, as a songwriter, what's the rule on royalty payments? Do the artists/writers get more for a longer song? You might have answered this in another thread a long time ago, but I can't remember now.

I remember that some of the Arista 45s had the wrong time because they didn't count the intro time. You'd see an intro time of :15 on the label and a time of 3:45, and the song would time out to 4:00. I can't say that was the case on all of them, and in most cases only the DJ copies showed the intro time, but I did notice if you added the two times together on some of the Arista 45s of the period you'd get the right time.

Or it was just a coincidence!

To Aaron: If a song is over 5 minutes (which has happened to me one time), a songwriter gets a higher royalty rate.

To Bill: The only Arista single I recall this happening on is "Could It Be Magic". It may have happened elsewhere but not very often.

The actual running time of my stock commercial 45 is also (3:08), but the printed time on the record label is "3:09" (Arista 0675) Let's Hang On (Record Label)
