I have a promo CD single of Cathy Dennis' "Too Many Walls" on Polydor 441 and it contains the following tracks and actual run times:

1) Radio Mix - 4:02 (printed time: 4:03)
2) Acapella - 4:02 (printed time: 4:03)

Normally I wouldn't call attention to an "a capella" version of a song appearing on a promo CD single since vocal-only versions of Top 40 hits rarely, if ever, get played on Top 40 radio. However, in this particular instance, the "Acapella" version of "Too Many Walls" isn't a vocal-only track like the description suggests but it's actually the single version (a.k.a. "Radio Mix") MINUS the percussion track and bass line. The end result is a more mellow, "dreamier" version of the song.

I'm curious to know if anyone recalls hearing (or playing) the "Acapella" version of "Too Many Walls" on the radio? It sounds like it would've worked nicely on Adult Contemporary radio in particular (though my local AC station always played the "Radio Mix").

Maybe it was a different Cathy Dennis song, but I think it was TMW...TM Century GoldDiscs had a "Cathy's Mix" which we played at the AC I was at in 1993-4...your description of the "acapella" mix sounds kind of like this.

I checked the TM database, and the song you're thinking of, Hykker, is
"Irresistible."

I know this song's parent album, "Move To This", was released in at least a few variations and my copy has the Single Version of "Too Many Walls" listed above. But I recently heard what I assume is the original album version running around 4:25 and I noticed what appears to be a drop-out at the 2:43 mark in the song on the word, "seem". Does anyone who has the original issue of the CD hear the same thing at the same point in the song? Just wanted to make sure it's not just me who's hearing it.

My copy of the CD has the original album version and I do not detect a drop-out at that point.

The version I heard is from the UK "Now That's What I Call Music" series, so if the original album doesn't have the drop out, I'm wondering if it might just be on that particular Now CD.

Hi Dan, Paul, etc:

I also have an early U.S. CD of 'Move to This', which contains the original versions of "Touch Me (All Night Long)", "Too Many Walls" and "Everybody Move". I have listened repeatedly to the section around 2:43 of the original CD album version from this disc, and just wanted to confirm that I do not detect any sort of drop-out either.

Just listening to this CD, and this is not the original LP version, sounds like the Radio Mix,
but slower, cause the drums are vastly similar to the Radio Mix. Perhaps the UK was serviced
it's own Radio Mix?

Original US CDs of Move to This have the 4:14 fade with no glitch.

The glitch is on the 2014 Move to This 2xCD, which has the original album version but the fadeout runs longer (4:24 total instead of 4:14).

I checked the NOW 21 [edit: whoops, I meant NOW 20] release and it has this longer album version with the glitch.

The only version with different drums that I know about is Too Many Walls (L'Autre Mix) aka Too Many Walls (Funkee Mix), which runs 4:00 or 4:05, depending on fade length.

Is this the set that was produced by Cherry Red or possibly, Real Gone Music? I just checked my rip of this and can't seem to hear anything odd around the 2:43 mark.

I'm saying my rips of these are both the same album version, but with the 10s longer fade, and with the glitch at 2:43:
Move To This (Expanded Edition) disc 1 track 4
Now That's What I Call Music! 20 disc 2 track 6

If there's a pressing of one of these doesn't have the glitch, that's great! Maybe your matrix numbers would help people spot the difference.

MJ,

I just pulled my CD copy of Now 20, UK off the shelf and listened and ripped it. For the record, it's CDS 79 8447 2 On the box. CDP 7 98449-2 on the actual CD #2.
I don't have the promo to compare, but the fade on this version seems to have a bit of silence involved. I stopped hearing content around 4:24 though the song tracks on to about 4:25.

Same for my Cathy Dennis (2CD Expanded Edition). It was a release on Cherry Red Records in the UK. I'm not sure of the numbers, because I can't seem to locate the CDs at the moment.

The only things I can add to this is that the Cherry Red CDs were a 2nd run if I am correct. The original run was in 2014, and maybe they fixed the glitch by 2022, when I purchased?

Sort-of the same thing for the NOW 20. The version I have has the artwork in a brown background and the text in a copper color. This didn't appear to be the same as
the image that popped up in my ripper. That one was more colorful, though it did say "NOW 20" and all the tracks seemed to match.

Before I post this, I'm going to take a look at your links to Discogs and see if they look the same. And, they do.
So, I'm still stumped about this glitch, because I simply am not hearing it on either copy I have.

Dave
