Just found a CD copy of No Jacket Required for $1. Hard to argue with that!

The CD was truly huge in 1985. not only did it top the Top Compact Disc chart for 12 weeks, but after hits with "One More Night", "Sussudio", "Don't Lose My Number", and a soundtrack single ("Separate Lives", with Marilyn Martin), there was still enough oomph left to send "Take Me Home" into the top 10. The B-side and CD extra track, "We Said Hello Goodbye", got a lot of top 40 airplay in NYC (and would later resurface in remixed form on the Playing for Keeps soundtrack). "Inside Out" got a bunch of rock airplay. And "Who Said I Would" would later hit the Hot 100 in 1991. Really truly huge. And a superb-sounding CD, to match.

So I dug out my promo 45 for "Take Me Home" - blue-label Atlantic 7-89472, printed and actual 4:37, "Edit Of Atlantic LP 81240 - No Jacket Required" printed at bottom of label, stereo version on both sides. Apparently, I never bought the commercial 45, but I'm pretty sure it was the same version as the promo 45.

Here are instructions for creating the (promo) 45 edit from No Jacket Required (assuming that the commercial 45 is the same as the promo 45):

Remove the first 8 beats of the song, from 0:00.0-0:04.2. ("Beats" assumes that song runs 119 BPM, not half that.)
Keep the 212 beats from 0:04.2-1:51.2.
Edit on bass drum downbeat at 1:51.2; is right before echoey tom-tom.
Remove the 32 beats from 1:51.2-2:07.4.
Keep the 218 beats from 2:07.4-3:57.5.
To find edit point, if the first "take" in the chorus starts on beat #1, edit on beat #7 - it's on a handclap.
Remove the 80 beats from 3:57.5-4:37.9.
Keep 4:37.9-5:53.2 (end).
Actually, the fade on the 45 is slightly truncated. It begins in the same place as the album version, but ends around 5:42 in the album version.

Your mixdown should run 4:52, including outro silence, which is about 15 seconds longer than the true 45 - you can fade to silence at the 4:37 mark if you want.

Your mixdown will have edit points at 1:47.0 and 3:37.1, and will extend to 4:52.4 (including outro silence) if you don't truncate the fade.

Plus, you'll need to raise the volume of the first two segments by 2 dB, or the edit at 3:37.1 will have an unexpected jump in volume within the word "take". That's no good.

The version on The A-List doesn't lop off the first 8 beats, and has the un-truncated LP fade. (Is this a TM Century edit?)

And a personal comment - if you really like the song, hunt down the 12" version, which goes overboard with the programmed percussion. It's on the 12"-ers CD.
