My commercial 45, confirmed as GNP Crescendo 372, has a listed time of (2:30) and an actual time of (2:32). My 45 is vinyl, with deadwax of "N.316 (crossout) 5-- 1A A1". I only post this info because the many current database CDs including this song have run times ranging from (2:33) to (2:37).

It will always feel sad and awkward posting to one of Jim's threads.

The vast majority of the CDs listed in the database feature the song in (E). The only one of these I have is Garage Band Classics (Simitar 55362). I recently listened to my 45 (GNP Crescendo 372) and, to my great surprise, it is also rechannelled! My 45 sounds just like the song sounds on the Simitar CD and not at all as it sounds on Nuggets From Nuggets, on which it is mono.

It is of course possible that my 45 is a later pressing. (The song had originally been issued on GNP Crescendo 364 as "Your Pushing Too Hard".)

I just checked my copy, GNP Crescendo GNP-372x which I
purchased new in 1966, and it's mono.
Deadwax info: N.316 (scratched out 0) 5.

The pressing genealogy of this 45 is all over the place for even the hit (second-issue) 372 and 372x copies. I have three stock copies, and all three differ, whether it's the font, font size, publishing credit or the G.N.P. Crescendo label logo. About the only thing they have in common is that they're all on light blue labels with black print.

The copy I bought new in 1967 (the local top-40s were generally slow to add new records) has the "G.N.P. Crescendo" logo with "Crescendo" in script style, and otherwise matches Jim's copy above: catalog number GNP 372, the same machine-stamped deadwax numbers, with the addition of a machine-stamped "H" opposite (RCA's Hollywood plant.)

The bottom perimeter states "GENE NORMAN PRESENTS [big space] HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A."

Gene must've figured we wouldn't notice the inherent hiss and crackles when he chose RCA's rock-bottom lowest vinyl grade for this 45. Sorry, but not even garage rock can mask the urban bustle of Regrind City.

The secondary label credits are in a font typical of RCA's Indianapolis plant. The publishing info is as follows:

Neil Music Inc.
Seeds Music Inc.
BMI

The mastering gives the grooves a rainbow effect when held under the light just right. The "B" side ("Try To Understand") cutting doesn't resemble the "A" side's at all, with hand-etched matrix numbers, and a very wide lead-in area reminiscent of some of the West Coast Uni masterings. There's no rainbow effect on this side, but the machine-stamped "H" is present.

My second stock copy looks like the first one at first glance, but a closer look shows everything to be different. While it does have the same "G.N.P. [script "Crescendo"] logo at the top, it's actually a little smaller. The paper finish is matte, unlike the glossy labels on the other two. All of the type is fuzzier, the catalog number is GNP 372x, and the label states "Produced by Marcus Tybalt". Secondary credit fonts don't appear to be of RCA origin. The publishing is:

Neil Music Inc.
Purple Bottle
Music
BMI

The deadwax matches Steve's copy [there's no "1A A1"], but everything else about it is the same as my first copy": "H" in deadwax and that rainbow groove effect under light.

The bottom perimeter states "GENE NORMAN Presents - HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A." Vinyl quality is better than the above copy, although that one was a pretty low bar to begin with.

My third stock copy also has the "H" in the deadwax, catalog number is GNP 372x, deadwax has the added "1A A1" and the bottom perimeter reads "GENE NORMAN PRESENTS HOLLYWOOD, CALIFORNIA, U.S.A.". The title, artist and secondary type fonts are typical of RCA's Rockaway, NJ plant. Publishing is:

Neil Mus. Inc.
Seeds Mus. Inc.
BMI

The label logo is also different: the letters G N and P (no periods) are arranged in blue ovals vertically in a vertical black rectangle, with "CRESCENDO" in bold letters in a horizontal box to the right, under which is "RECORDS", in a similar, but smaller box. The groove pattern produces the same rainbow effect. Vinyl is reground, but not as noisy as the first copy above. Like copy #1 above, there is no producer credit listed.

Interestingly, aside from label font differences, it's the slight "B" side deadwax differences that provide some clues as to where the records were pressed:

Copy 1 has either a hand-etched or machine-stamped "I" to the right of the "H". RCA Indianapolis. Or RCA Honolulu? ;)

Copy 2 has no additional markings than the "H". RCA Hollywood? Perhaps, but the matte finish and fuzzy label printing may indicate a non-RCA plant. In either case, the metal parts originated at RCA Hollywood.

Copy 3 has a hand-drawn line connecting the uppermost parts of the letter "H", thus transforming it into an ersatz "R". RCA Rockaway. Makes sense, considering the font styles found on this copy are typical of that RCA plant.

Three different pressings, all based on metal parts from RCA's Hollywood plant, and all three play the same dry "Pushin' Too Hard" mono mix. On most of the CDs I have with "Pushin' Too Hard", the song is (E). I have the mono track on the Nuggets box, but it has the same added reverb that the (E) versions do, even if it doesn't sound phasey and murky. Whatever it is, it's definitely not what was on the 1966-67 372 or 372x mono 45.

Paul, my guess is that your 45 is a later pressing from well after the song's chart run. There weren't any commercial 45s being pressed in stereo in late '66 and early '67, let alone one that was in electronically-rechanneled stereo.

The only CD track I have that matches the mono 45s listed above is on the Seeds' U.K. Big Beat compilation, Singles As & Bs 1965-1970. "Pushin'" sounds great, bone dry and with nary a trace of that extra reverb.          ;

Thanks to both the above posters for your input. My 45 has an orange label and was purchased from a mail order dealer in the mid to late 1980s. I can now safely conclude that it is a later pressing.

I also have the Big Beat/Ace UK compilation. Thanks for confirming that it features the true 45 mix, which the Rhino Nuggets set most definitely does not.

If anyone out there who has the Big Beat/Ace version of "Pushin' Too Hard" could let me hear it, please PM me (I can't seem to find a download store to purchase the track).

Thanks! It's one of my favorite 60s tracks.
