I discovered today that "Rebel Yell" is a unique single mix. It has a delay effect on his vocal in parts of the song.

Unfortunately, I lost my subscription to the database. Is this mix on CD?

It's listed on only one CD:

Rhino 79969 The Big 80's - Arena Rock

BTW on iTunes you can find the single versions for several of Billy's 80s vinyl 45s including "Rebel Yell," "Hot In The City," "White Wedding" and "Mony Mony" (Live).

Santi, on iTunes, is the single version of "Rebel Yell" shown as "Rebel Yell -
Single", containing "Rebel Yell (Edit)"? Have you verified this is the single,
with the delay effect as indicated here? thanks....

Yes David that is the version on iTunes I am referring to.

Perhaps David or Grant can tell us where exactly is the delay effect on his vocal so I can listen and determine if it indeed has that effect. I usually listen once (when I add songs to my iPod) and then I may not listen to it again ever so I don't recall if it did or didn't have that effect. I do know it is a full minute shorter than the LP version which is why I downloaded it a few weeks ago.

The additional vocal effects on the 45 mix sound like
more than just standard reverb...the last word or couple
of words are actually repeated in an "ECHO, Echo, echo"
canyon-type effect. The first occurrence is at 1:25 on
the line "brought you to me babe [babe, babe repeated in
echo effect]". Again at 1:30 with an echo repeat of "by
me, by me".

This is based on the lone CD appearance of the 45 mix on
the VH-1 "Arena Rock" CD.

I never noticed this before.   Thanks for pointing out
the difference!

I just listened again to the track I downloaded and I can report that it does have the echo effect as pointed out above. I also hear it again twice right before the cold ending.

Santi, can you tell us on exactly where you got the 45
version of Rebel Yell on iTunes? All I can find is one
Sony comp, and you have to buy the whole album for that one
track.

I run a power search with Billy Idol for the artist and Rebel Yell single for the title.

I'm pretty sure it's one of the Digital 45's.

Found it. Thanks.

Why can't iTunes make their searches more comprehensive?

Just an added bit of info in case it ever comes up: the echo of "babe" at 1:25 is in the left channel only, while the echo at 1:30 of "here by me" is in the right channel.

The 45 version also appears on "Now That's What I Call Music / The Millennium Series / 1984, disc 1."

I'd be curious to know if anyone's compared the fidelity between Arena Rock and Now 1984. Now 1984 has some visible hard limiting but it's not truly brick-walled.

I don't see any hard limiting on the iTunes version... but is it lossless?

Itunes downloads are NEVER lossless. They are 256 AAC lossy.

The version on Now The Millennium Series 1984 (1999) appears to be digitally identical to the UK Billy Idol collection 11 Of The Best (1988), or at least the file I have in my collection that's labeled as such. (I owned Now but not 11.) It seems a little loud for 1988 mastering, but it has a nice dynamic range, no significant clipping, and a decent EQ.

The Rhino disc has a comparable dynamic range, but the EQ seems just a little muffled compared to the 11/Now mastering. I think that Rhino may not have gotten the lowest-generation source tapes for their Billy Idol tracks; "Dancing With Myself" doesn't sound that great on Like Omigod (compared with Eric's Hard To Find 45s On CD Vol. 16 More '80s Essentials And Beyond).
