Not listed in the database, but I'm looking for information on the "hit" version in the US for Strangelove.
I have the US 1992 CD single issue of Strangelove (Sire 9 40328-2). Track 1 is a non-described version which runs about 3:45.
There was a US promo CD single from 1987 (PRO-CD-3213), which included 4 tracks:
1. Strangelove - Remix Edit 3:46
2. Strangelove - 7" Version 3:44
3. Strangelove - 7" Blind Edit 3:57
4. Strangelove - Highjack Mix 6:29
Does the 3:45 version from the 1992 retail single match either the Remix/Edit or 7" Version from the 1987 promo CD single, both of which run approximately the same length?

Off the top of my head I believe it is different. I have this promo CD so if you want to hear track 1 I can send it to you if you PM me. I think I have the commercial single as well and from memory it's track 2 off of the promo. The Remix Edit is awesome!

Would it be correct to say that the remix edit was likely the "radio version," or would the 7" version?
...Or have we determined the CD single version is different from this promo disc versions... and would THAT version be the "radio version?"
The collection, "Hit," has a 3:46 version listed. I also have the remix edit, running about 3:52.
I then have a 4:53 length version (LP version maybe?), a "pain mix," and the 12" extended mix.
I'd just like to put the radio version on my stream.

It's hard to remember all the mixes I've heard on radio for this since I heard the song in several radio formats.
But I will say the mix that sounds most like what I heard most in 1987 is in the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIrm0dHbCDU
To my ears, it sounds like the 7" mix. Hope that helps.

Back in '94 my local radio station (Philadelphia area) resurrected a few
late '80s songs and this was one of them. Back then I used to believe
they were brand new since they were in heavy rotation. They used to
always play track 1 from the promo single listed above. Another one
that comes to mind is New Order's "True Faith." This station (WPST)
always played "The Morning Sun Remix / Edit" (aka "7 Inch" in the UK)
despite the release of "True Faith '94" that same year (most likely since
it was not released in the U.S.).

This is the version that I heard on my local radio
station and still hear played today. The YouTube clip
lists it as "Remix". Notice that it starts with a
synth intro before the drums kick in. The video shows
that it is from promo CD 3213. The "Remix Edit" on there
plays a different version. Does anyone know where I can
find this mix as heard in the YouTube video? And what is
it called? Are there two different pressings of this
promo CD perhaps? Thanks for any info!

I just listened to the intro from the YT clip as well as the intro of each version on the promo CD. NONE of the versions on the promo CD match the YT video.

Thanks, Aaron. Indeed. I wonder where this mix
originates.

Well, I took a look at my promo CD, and it does have “RE-1” in the
matrix. I guess there’s a possibility that another non-RE-1 promo CD
exists. I’ll keep my eye out!

Thanks, Aaron. I bet that is our answer. I'm guessing
that the original 3213 promo CD pressing had this
"Remix" version, as heard in the YouTube clip.

For what it's worth, I emailed three different sellers, and all of them responded. Every seller said their copy has "RE-1" in the matrix. That means we're 0 for 4 on finding one without the RE-1. Clearly they must be a lot less common if they do exist.

Jason, funny that mix in the youtube video is a
perfect match for the version I've had in my mp3
library for years. However mine runs 6:32 and I think
it was one of the many 12" singles for this song. In
87-89 I purchased 3 different commercial Sire 12"
singles looking for a certain mix, each time
disappointed. Turned out the mix I wanted was the
"Pain Mix" which i did eventually find. I no longer
own any of those 12".
But there have been an incredible number of different
mixes for this song!!
So I have this mp3 of the long version of the mix you
seek, I just wish I knew its name and where I got this
from.
FWIW,the mix/edit you want to me sounds very familiar
from radio so I likely heard it too in my area. I hope
we can identify it.
MM
EDIT: Update, I went to digital download land and
checked out the various mixes. The mix I mention above
is what they call the "Maxi Mix" and is definitely the
first 12" single version that was released. While WLIR
was happily playing the "Pain Mix" all the time, this
"Maxi Mix" is exactly what I got on the 12" single
(the first of several of them). What I can't find
online is an edit of that mix. So that remains a
mystery. This edit may not have even been a U.S.
release.
EDIT AGAIN: well, sorry, but I just compared closely
and the mix in the video, while very similar to the
12" "Maxi-Mix", is yet another different mix that is
very similar and has a very similar intro.
So....hopefully we can eventually identify that
specific mix. OY.

Aaron and Mark, thank you both for your time trying to
figure out this mix!
I actually have the "Strangelove" CD maxi-single (from
one of the 2004 Reprise "Singles" boxes). It has the
Maxi, Midi, Blind, and Pain mixes.

I have an update! I was looking at this again today
and I found a mix that (mostly) matches the mystery
mix in the above video.
Except for the first :06 seconds, the mix is an edit
of the LP version from "Music For The Masses". You can
hear the LP version here altho in poor quality:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekMi8MTtE8w
Seems they fixed up a special synth intro for edit.
The same synth part is in the LP mix, but has extra
effects in it right before the drum comes in.
But the edited version from :06 onward is the LP mix
with 3 edits and an early fade. I verified this with a
sync-check. It's spot on match.
I suppose it makes sense if this was an early promo
that got quickly replaced with newer revised promo
single mixes.

Mark, thank you!!! You solved the mystery! I have many
Depeche Mode albums, but I do not have "Music for the
Masses" in my collection (with the original "LP
Version" of "Strangelove"). That's why I could never
figure this out. Every Depeche Mode compilation or
singles box includes a remix or the "Single Version"
of "Strangelove". And this promo CD edit/mix seems to
have long been forgotten, except for radio airplay.
Mark, if I take the first 6 seconds of the "Maxi Mix"
(this is the same synth intro as used in this
edit/mix) and join in an edited "LP Version" (with the
extra effects right before the drums come in) I
believe that I can recreated this edit/mix! I will
give it a go...
Thanks, again!!!

The single was released in 1987, and
the single version is the 7" Version, as promoted by
the record company / artist. This mix is the original
version, the mix found on its parent album being a
remix that fits with the rest of the album. The single
tanked in the U.S., limping to No. 76 on the Hot 100
Singles chart, therefore there no hit version.
Bomb The Bass were red hot in 1988, thanks to Beat Dis
and Buffalo Stance. They were commissioned by Sire,
who were convinced of its hit potential, to remix the
track for a U.S. re-release in 1988. Their labour was
issued as a single in 1988 as "Strangelove '88". The
single version, per Mute / Sure was the Remix Edit, an
edit of the Highjack Remix. This release limped to No.
50, therefore there's no hit version, since the single
flopped.
"Srangelove '88" was released as a commercial 2-track
CD single (among other formats), one of those 3" CDs.
Track 1 is the Remix Edit. If you're wondering, track
2 is the Remix Edit of "Nothing".
For the 1992 reissues of all Depeche Mode singles,
only the 1987 single was reissued. "Strangelove '88"
was not given the reissue treatment.

Thanks for the info! As for no hit version,
technically the song charted twice on the Hot 100
(although in different mixes) with a combined total of
15 weeks on the Hot 100 (6 weeks in 1987, and 9 weeks
in 1988). While not technically a "hit" either time,
15 weeks is quite a bit of time for that era of music.
Considering how it has received quite a bit of
recurrent airplay over the years, one could argue that
its "hit" status is not reflected by its peak
positions on the Hot 100.

But this board is strict about its rules, although they seem to apply them capriciously and not uniformly. I typed that to prove a point. If a single doesn't hit the Top 40, it is not considered a hit. That's a well-established fact (not mine). Now you are trying to apply common sense and logic to decide what is the real hit version is, but you don't want to apply the same logic and common sense when a record company decides not to commercially release a single version and instead decides to include an 5 minute album version or a 6 minute remix as track 1 on the commercial single. |

Are you a database subscriber? If not, then that might explain why it's difficult for you to understand the very simple "rules" that we use.
In the database, Pat very rarely mentions "hit version" at all. In the few cases where he does, it's typically to distinguish between an early, non-hit release that was later re-issued (perhaps remixed or perhaps even re-recorded) and became a hit. In those few cases, "hit version" is mentioned for clarification only. Nobody here is trying to define what is a hit and what is not. For Pat's purposes, he includes consensus top 40 hits: songs that made the top 40 on the major US charts, such as Billboard and Cashbox.
As a reader of the database, when you see a list of CDs containing a particular song, most commonly next to each CD you'll see "45 version" or "LP version." This designation tells us ONE THING. It tells us that the particular CD contains the same version that appears on the 2-track single configuration in the US. That's it. End of story. Period!!! It does not elaborate any further as to what is the "hit" version. That is a bit more subjective, because as you know, the "hit" version could've varied from region to region. Some radio stations may have played a promo-only radio edit. Some may have played a remix. Some may have played the album version. Yes, there was in many cases a consensus among stations as to the version they played, but none of that information matters for the database. "45 version" (aka "single version") is simply a reference for database readers, and that's how it is used here on the forum.
Does that help explain it any better?
