Was listening to the 4/26/75 AT40 this morning and heard "Killer Queen" by Queen starting cold (without the finger snaps). Then I took a listen on "Greatest Hits I" and found that the last finger snap bleeds right into Mercury's opening line.
I also have an unscoped aircheck of WLS' Big 89 of 1975 ("Killer Queen" was #6) and it too opens cold with no finger snap bleeding into the opening line. (Not the whole countdown--just the last three hours or so.)
Do we have a 45/LP difference here? Does the 45 have the finger snaps at the open? (Or maybe it's a promo 45/stock 45 difference.)

I have a stock and DJ copy. Snapping is on all sides even the DJ mono side. There could have been a different DJ copy, or WLS could have "de-popped" it by editing the click out.

Thanks, Bill. Should mention the AT40 version also had it declicked, so I wonder if there might be another promo 45 out there.

My commercial 45 also has the snaps. I've never heard of this alt version before. My guess is that all commercial singles are the same as the album version. Whether this non-snap version is on a dj 45 or a custom declicked edit .... well hopefully others on this board with dj 45s can chime in on what they have.

And btw, COOL that this was the #6 song of the year. This was probably my #2 song of the year (next to "Could It Be Magic"). On my local Boston station, this song went to #1, IIRC. It sounds like it was also a #1 hit at WLS, wherever that is.

WLS would be Chicago--the Big 89.
And I stand corrected after taking a second listen via KLOU in St. Louis' webstream. The AT40 restoration just edits out the fingersnaps at the top but the one fingersnap that bleeds into Mercury's opening lyric is still intact. So it doesn't sound like there was a second promo version out there--just a stripping of opening snaps (like stripping an opening countoff).
Anyway, thanks to all for confirming.

Funny, I just heard this on AT40 as well and noticed the snap WAS indeed over the opening words "She keeps a ..." and that Casey is talking up until that point, so yeah, they just deleted the lead off snaps and there is no alt version.

I would guess that most stations cued past the finger snaps when they carted up the song back in '75, I know the station I worked at did. For a fast-paced format like Top 40, the barely audible snaps would just sound loose.
I'd imagine the album stations left the snaps intact since they were looser/slower paced.
My promo 45 also contains the snaps.
