Good work in uncovering that one. Pat changed the database to indicate that all commercial copies ran (4:20), and the (3:36) version on the Right Stuff Best of Slow Jams CD is a DJ edit.

Now, does anyone know what section of the commecial 45 is shaved off to create the DJ version?

The first chorus and verse. The only time I ever heard the DJ edit was on the radio back in 1977.

I don't remember ever hearing an edited version of this song. Both the LP and original 45 were the same version IIRC.

So you're saying that I should cut from about the :16 mark where the vocal begins to about the :52.6 mark where the second chorus starts? Seems like an awkward edit, but the result does match the (3:40) time.

Thanks!

OK, right after the intro on letter A when she starts singing (i'll put a slash where the edit is "I've got/looove on my mind". At that edit, it goes directly to the second chorus. Where she sings the word "love" there are backup singers included. That is the only edit.

Personally, since the 45 and LP were the same, I can't think of a reason I would want to ever hear the DJ edit, except that radio played it.

Regarding Natalie Cole "I've Got Love on My Mind", the database currently states the following general comment:

(dj copies of this 45 run (3:40) and (4:20); commercial copies are all (4:20).

There's one database CD containing the short DJ edit but it runs a little bit shorter at 3:36. I'm wondering if anyone can confirm that the 3:40 short DJ run time is accurate, or is that possibly just the printed time on the promo 45 record label?

I have finally acquired the less common, listed (3:40) mono/stereo promo
45. Both sides' actual time is (3:42). Mono side deadwax: "PRO-8582   F-1
(93427-A)" Stereo side deadwax: "SPRO-8583   F-1   (93427-A)".

I do own the one db CD that claims to be the DJ edit. Unfortunately, it is
not. Instead, it falls under the "noble attempt to recreate the DJ 45 edit"
category. I didn't listen to that CD's version all the way through - I didn't
need to. As soon as I heard that the first verse's vocals were left intact on
it, while the correct short promo 45 version didn't, I knew right away that
the CD version on Right Stuff was an incorrect edit.

In one of the earliest posts for this thread, Grant's description of where
the edit occurs is exactly where I also heard it just now. (And if even I can
hear it, you know it must be obvious! :)    ) Like Grant posted, it removes
the entire first verse and chorus. To me, the edit is clearly made after she
sings her second word - "I've Got....", at about the :15 second mark. Then
the ".....Love On My Mind" portion from the start of the second verse is
spliced in. It's a bit of a "sonic jolt", actually, as Natalie's second verse
vocal has a good deal more energy attached to it, as opposed to her
softer, understated first verse vocal.

I don't remember ever hearing this shorter version as a current in my area
in 1977, however. While I'm sure some in radio were clamoring for a
shorter edit, what Capitol came up with here does kind of mess with the
song's overall "bio-rhythms", IMO. To the point where most PDs/MDs may
have just decided it wasn't worth replacing the longer promo v with this
one, just to save 40 seconds. Who knows? That might've been what
Capitol was hoping radio would ultimately decide on when they made it!

I was anticipating a jarring edit from the moment I read the title of the thread. "I've Got Ove On My Mind."

Both you guys actually just made it even funnier. History's been made
tonight. With him just adding the "L" to "ove", it's the first time any of us has
ever seen Ed type in a capital letter, in 4425 posts!    :)
