Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that all available CD versions of the Walker Bros. "The Sun
Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" is faded early from the
original 45 version? If you listen to the 45, there
is a long "oooh-oooh-wee-oooh" vocal that fades out.
This is totally missing on all CDs available here.
I had to get an imported Walkers CD from Europe which
has that 45 version. It is in mono however. Just
thought someone might be interested.

Welcome to the board, Chris!

Do you know exactly how long your vinyl 45 copy of "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" runs? I'm trying to determine how early the versions on CD fade compared to the 45. I have the lone domestic CD appearance of the song in mono on the Love Sixties CD (JCI 3102) and the sound quality is horrendous. Does the mono version on your CD sound clean? And which Walker Brothers disc has the full 45 version?

Todd,
Thanks for the welcome !!
Although it's filed away right now, the 45 if I
remember correctly runs about 3:06 but might even be
labeled a few seconds longer. The missing seconds of
fading song are noticeable to an old dinosaur DJ like
myself who has probably played that song several
hundred times on the air over the years.
The import CD is "Portrait" issued by Polygram-UK
and its catalog number is #5581802. The track is
labeled 3:17 run time and has a few extra seconds
faded from the 45. By the way, this was the ONLY
imported CD I found that has this version of the song.
All the others are the stereo versions that are chopped
at 2:59 or 3:00.

The original 45 is labeled 3:04.

My original 45 (Smash 2032) is listed at, and times out to, 3:04.

3:04 is how long the mono version runs on my Love Sixties CD. So I take it, I do have the complete 45 length then?

As I mentioned in my previous post, the sound quality of "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore" on this disc is awful. Chris Quinn, how would you describe the sound quality of the song on your import CD?

Todd,
The imported "Portrait" CD has been digitally remastered from the original master tapes. Sound
quality is top notch. You apparently have the 45
length version, but I'd recommend getting the
import disc for the improvement in quality plus
you'll have the extra length of fadeout not on the
45.

3:04 is the correct LP and 45 length for this song and there is only 1 cd in the US that includes the complete version of this song and that is the JCI cd mentioned in the database. The vinyl LP which states stereo, is not stereo, so that leads me to believe that the song was remixed from the multitracks for stereo cd release and there must be some tape damage at the point where the stereo versions fade out.

Pat, the stereo mix is from 60s but only released
overseas. Smash in the U.S. just wasn't given or didn't
ask for it in stereo. Years ago I had both of their hits
in stereo on a UK best-of album from late 60s.
Like many other UK hits, the stereo versions made their
way over here in the CD era.

As for the early fade, it's just another case of whoever
mixed it for stereo at the time just approximated the
fade based on notes or whatever. Most people didn't or
don't care - but ooooh so frustrating to us collectors!
(and for crazy mastering guys who's job it is to "fix" an
early fade on a stereo master, too many times)

Michaeldila, to my knowledge there's only the one mix.
It's possible a particular CD might sound a little better
if the engineer EQ'd it differently but that's about all
they can do. Sometimes narrowing the channels will bring
a vocal out a little more in the center.

Thanks MM. i had read somewhere a while ago that a stereo version of
the single mix was on one of the eric records cd’s but that was
innaccurate.

MM,

do you recall the title of that "Best of". Maybe "The Walker Brothers
Story" (1968)?

David, I couldn't remember since my LP is long gone. So I
just checked Discogs. My album was "Greatest Hits" which
is listed as 1975. So I stand corrected on the date. I
guess I just assumed it was late 60s because the album
looked like a 60s style cover.
