I was just reading the liner notes to Ace's excellent Golden Age of Americal Rock N Roll - Volume 9 CD and was taken aback by the following statement about Ooh Poo Pah Doo by Jessie Hill: "Although Billboard mistakenly listed Part 2 as the hit, it was Part 1 which actually charted." Does anyone have any info to back up this assertion? I always thought the instrumental was the hit (Part 2). With all the mixing up of the sides on different CDs I'm now thoroughly confused!

Fret not, ACE got it right! At least, that's the side I heard on Denver radio back in 1960, and at least two of Liberty Records' oldies comps from the 60s only feature Part One. And the hit was on Minit Records, which was distributed, and later acquired, by Liberty. I have to think they'd know which side was the right one.

The plot thickens! If this was the case nationally, should some sort of note be made in the database?

I'd like to revisit this to see if any of our other veteran Top 40 music experts remembers which side of Jessie Hill's "Ooh Poo Pah Doo" they heard (or played) on the radio. It appears we may have another El Chicano "Viva Tirado" type situation here where there's dispute as to whether Part 1 or Part 2 is the true hit 45 side.
