The following is a list of every single that peaked on the Billboard Top 40 chart in 1970 (based on Joel Whitburn's Pop Annual 1955-1999 publication) and also includes the Top 40 hits Pat has included in the database based a composite of other music charts. Through extensive research (and the assistance of many, many posted contributions here on this message board from very helpful board members, especially my good friend Jim a.k.a. "jimct"), I've made my best efforts to determine whether the corresponding commercial 45 release for each single was issued in mono or stereo. This list only accounts for original 45 releases and not later re-issues.
I have posted a mono/stereo 45 list for each year from 1968-1975 (see links below) and hope forum members and fellow music collectors will find these lists to be a useful reference guide. I also highly encourage anyone to let me know if there are any errors, inaccuracies, or omissions so that I can make the necessary corrections.

Todd, I reported on 1970's 45 info a good while back, and at that time I
didn't include listed/actual time differences of less than :03. I do own all
of them and know all the relevant mono/stereo & listed/actual timing
info, however. So here it all is, taken from the Post-It notes I still have
attached to each 45:

I did a quick calculation of the percentage of Top 40 singles from 1970 released in stereo... Out of the 275 singles listed above, 71 were made available in stereo, which comes out to a percentage of 26.9% (rounded to the nearest tenth).
By comparison, approximately 19.1% of the 45s on the 1969 list were issued in stereo and just a mere 3.1% were stereophonic in 1968.
So even though stereo 45 releases saw steady growth through 1971, they were still outnumbered by their mono 45 counterparts by roughly a 3-to-1 margin. Evidently, record labels at this point were still by and large electing to issue commercial singles with the mixes that consumers were accustomed to hearing on AM radio.

I have a mono stock copy of "Our House" by CSNY. Has the typical A-18451-MO on the label. (Instead of the ST-A- you'd see on a stereo copy)

My stock copy is mono, too, so that makes at least two pressing plants that produced mono stocks: Monarch and Plastic Products.

Also I see "Walk A Mile in My Shoes" listed as mono. I've never been able to track down a mono copy of that songs on vinyl. And I've looked! (Even my promo copies are stereo). I was hoping a mono copy would fix the bad phase reversal issue that is on every issue, LP or 45. Was a mono version of that song released on 45?

You are correct... I had mistakenly listed "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" as mono, even though my notes and sources (including the 45 label itself) confirm the 45 was issued in stereo. Thanks for catching and reporting this error.

Yes, mono still reigned in 1970, but I wonder, and I know it wouldn't be easy
to answer this question, which 45s are fold-downs of a stereo LP mix vs.
which ones are dedicated mono mixes!

But there was really no excuse for this since many of the singles that were commercially issued in mono were stereo on the promo copies...most, if not all of the rock material on Atlantic-distributed labels was (though the soul releases tended to be mono on promos too) so the stampers existed.
Columbia was a bit less predictable but most of their 1970 singles (with the exception of "25 or 6 to 4") were mono/stereo. My promo of "Cecilia" is mono, but I'm pretty sure we were serviced with a mono/stereo copy where I worked at the time...ISTR it was the single mix in stereo too.

In answer to questions regarding fold-downs, can't say for most of them, but as I've posted before, I'm 99.9% sure that Ray Stevens's "Everything is Beautiful" is a fold-down. I folded the stereo mix down and it sounds EXACTLY like the 45. In addition, its flip-side, "A Brighter Day," is mono on the album... there's apparently only one mix of that song.

Can anyone confirm for certain whether stereo commercial 45 pressings of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's "Our House" do actually exist? An eBay seller claims to have a stereo copy for sale, but I haven't yet come across concrete evidence anywhere else.

As reflected in the master list, my research suggests that commercial 45 copies of the following hits were issued in stereo:
Blood, Sweat & Tears - "Hi-De-Ho"
Brown, James - "Ain't It Funky Now (Part 1)"
Brown, James - "Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine (Part 1)"
However, each of these songs have made an occasional CD appearance in mono, according to the database. So does anyone know if these singles were also issued as mono commercial 45s? I realize it's also possible the mono CD entries could reflect a mono DJ 45 release or even be fold-downs of the stereo mix.

Hi Todd,
My Get Up promo 45 is mono on both sides. One
side, DJ-A-X, has the full version with a label time of
5:22.
The other side, DJ-B-X2, is banded with part one fading
out and, after a few seconds, part two fading in. The
label times are 2:49 and 2:33 respectively for a total of
5:22.
Unfortunately, I don't have the other two 45s.

Todd, my "Hi-De-Ho" promo 45 is mono/stereo, and my "Ain't It Funky Now"
promo 45 has Part 1 on one side and Part 2 on the other, both in stereo. All
those Hip-O Select 2-CD volumes were pretty darn good at including
multiple versions/mixes of a JB 45, if they found them to exist. Although
with the frequency of 45 "remixes" that he did/re-serviced, I still can't
completely rule out a mono 45 version could've snuck in there somehow - I
just have no evidence of it.
