Was this one sent to radio via promo CD single? I seem to remember it sounding hotter on the
radio as compared to the album version on Go West Young Man, but I could be mistaken.

We received it on an MCA compilation promo in April of 1991. It also had Alanis' first pop hit "Too Hot", which was four years before she reworked her image and hit the US charts.
As for "Place...", it was a CHR edit, but I cannot remember if it was a hotter mix. I had downloaded the CD album mix and I heard the guitar solo on it, so I don't think that the song was down-mixed for AC radio.
I always thought that when Michael sang "Plaaaaaaaaaaaace in this world", he sounded a bit like a buzz saw.
Maybe it might be worth also noting that in September of 1991, the follow up single called "For You" was a provided as a hotter CHR and AC mix for radio. It was named something like the David Scott mix (I can't really the producer's name).

Besides the time differences, are the LP and Edit Remixes the "same" mix?

"I don't think that the song was down-mixed for AC radio."
The song was down-mixed for AC radio. I don't have the CD at my disposal at the moment but the "AC remix" had the guitar solo muted, amongst other things.

I had remembered that the guitar solo removed for the AC mix of "I Will Be There For You", two years later. I didn't know if this song followed the same template. I'll be interested to hear from Smokin' Tom whether the album and edit mixes are of the same mix.

Likewise, Jody. I knew a second mix exists, my ears weren't fooling me. It blows my
mind that such a spiritual/uplifting song reached the top 10 on the pop charts. Doubt
the same thing would happen nowadays.

Well I'll be. The Edit/Remix or Full Remix is the version I remember from CHR. It's
mixed with an electric guitar in the front and other instrumentation brought forward.
It's slightly less on the vocal than the LP Version. These hotter mixes catapulted the
record to top 10 status, no doubt. Well done Smokin' TG!

I just obtained another promo CD for "Place In This World," which has not been previously mentioned.
PRO-CD-4204
1. LP Version (listed 4:01; actual 3:59)
2. AC Remix (listed & actual 4:12)
3. Soft AC Remix (listed 4:12 & actual 4:14)
Tracks 1 & 2 have a guitar solo at 2:15, but the guitar is mixed quite a bit lower on the AC Remix. For the Soft AC Remix, they have replaced the guitar solo with a Toto-like synthesizer solo.

Came across the music video, and I noticed that it's sped up a half step. The
song is in C until after the guitar solo when it modulates to C Sharp. Every
other version I have heard has it in B to C. Is this the version that CHR was
playing?

Here's the "Full Remix" for anyone interested. The five main differences are:
1. The string synth in the choruses have been buried in the mix, if not outright
muted.
2. A guitar is added during the first chorus.
3. The drums during the second verse are brought forward in the mix, with the
reverb removed. A crosstick appears on the 2 of every beat, during the second
half.
4. The drum fill before the outro is different.
5. The outro contains Chicago-esque horns.

I finally got around to comparing all the difference versions, and there are FIVE distinctly different mixes of "Place In This World."
- The LP Version is on all three promo CDs (titled "Original CD Mix" on the independent release).
- The "Remix" from the independent promo CD has additional synthesizer overdubs during the guitar solo, and the solo itself has been lowered in the mix. The fade is also a bit longer.
- The "Full Remix" is a completely new mix. In addition to the five points made above, it also has a different reverb/effect on the vocals, different drum sound and percussion, and it is missing the synthesizer harmony during the second and third chorus. The fade is even longer on this mix. (The "Edit/Remix" is simply an edit of the "Full Remix," cutting the first chorus in half and fading early.)
- The "AC Remix" is most similar to the LP Version but drastically lowers the volume of the electric guitar solo.
- The "Soft AC Remix" replaces most of the guitar solo with a synthesizer solo.

Wow, gang, good ears! I listened to the clips above, so I'm bracing for
YouTube to recommend CCM videos for the next few months...
While I can't speak to the cassingle, the vinyl single claims to be the "LP
Version" (listed/actual 4:01). Based on the descriptions here, it sounds
like this is correct.
Pat: I also have this on two compilation CDs that aren't in the database.
Details are buried in the garage, but my database shows these:
- Songs 4 Life: Feel The Power (Time-Life)
- Now & Forever (no details here, but I vaguely remember this being a BMG
Special Products comp)

I have the promo single with the soft AC remix (which is my preferred version), AC remix and album version. Aaron, can you give the label # info for the promo CD versions with the "Remix" and "Full Remix" (completely new mix)? Those sound very interesting - and I'd like to hear them.

Aaron,
Which is the hit version, the 3:42 edit/remix or the 3:59 LP Version? Or is neither the hit version?
This is one I honestly cannot tell.

This is one of the many times when our late friend Jim would pipe in with vivid details on the version his station played and/or the version the record rep said that most stations were going with. I was only in 7th grade when this song came out, and I didn't start working in top 40 radio until two years later when I was in 9th grade. My local top 40 station (the one I ended up working for) played a majority of their music from TM Century HitDiscs. Without knowing for sure, a safe bet would be that they played the LP Version, which I believe is the only version TM issued on any of their discs. The US 7" and cassette singles also have the LP version. I'd say that was likely the hit version, although I'm betting some stations played the Edit/Remix.

My local CHR station played the 3:42 (actually runs 3:37)
edit/remix. IMO, it sounded "hotter" than the LP version
and I consider it the "hit" version.

I would probably agree with you Paul. I think it becomes a challenge sometimes in the 90's to identify the true hit version for some songs.
