Hi folks. The usual question. Can the 45 be extracted
from the LP (realizing of course that the 45 was mono and
the LP was stereo)?

Can't answer your question, but I have one of my own.
Was there a radio edit of this song? My promo copy is simply a white-label version of the stock and is (listed) 4:50. WRKO played an edit where the 2nd verse was removed, and I think a couple other edits. Given that Columbia often issued multiple promos, I was just wondering. Then again it could have been a house edit.

I think I might have found the answer to my initial
query. Somebody loaded the 45 to YouTube.
One very small edit somewhere in the beginning (sounds
like any one of the four-bars between the (:06) and the
(:16) mark on the LP version can be edited [so long as
you start and end the edit on the downbeat]). What I
don't know is whether it's a dedicated mono mix on the 45
or a fold-down. But at least it appears you can create a
stereo single version just by chopping off one of the
four-bars.
As to whether any promo singles were shorter I don't
know, Steve.

Thanks for this, Doug. I too was interested in possibly creating a stereo 45 of The Chambers Brothers' "I Can't Turn You Loose" from the LP version at some point, but didn't know if there was audio unique to the 45 that would make such an edit impossible. You evidently are saying it can be done.

I'm still not sure about that, Paul. It didn't sound like
there was any, but that's based on jumping forward a few
times in the YouTube video to see if times lined up. I
don't have A/B software to really do a valid comparison.

Doug, the 45 version uses a completely
different vocal take, so the answer is no.

I found a stereo version on YouTube (not dubbed from vinyl), although it abruptly stops at 3:29. I compared the vocal take to the 45, and they sound the same to me. So, there must be at least one stereo recording of the song on CD that matches the 45 vocal take.
I folded down this stereo version, and I can conclude that the 45 is a dedicated mono mix. The stereo fold down is pretty close, though.

Aaron, I don't know. Maybe you could give it a second listen (and
goodness knows, I don't say that to you too often, my friend!) Perhaps there
were two different 1969 stock 45s issued. I listened quite carefully to both
the 45 I own & the CD version a number of times a year or two ago, and I
clearly recall that his voice is much more raw and emotive at times on the 45
version, especially during the 2nd half of the song (after your You Tube
sample stopped, perhaps). His voice almost "cracks" a couple of times, it is
so raw, raspy and impassioned on that single. It jumped right out at me, just
like the musical differences I'd heard on the 45 versions of songs like "All
Right Now", "Going Up The Country" and "Evil Woman". Aaron, it is great
news that you believe the 45v is on CD somewhere; I'd buy it immediately.

Jim, given the fact that it's on YouTube, who knows what the source is. Ed was kind enough to send me a copy of the CD version he has. I will do a more careful comparison to see if I notice any differences. It's highly possible that some (but not all) of the vocals are different between the stereo version and the single. This was the case with "Magic Carpet Ride," as is pointed out in another thread; the first verse and first chorus are a different take, but the second verse and second chorus match between the mono and stereo.

The stereo CD version Ed sent me matches the 45 vocal take exactly, voice cracking and all. Other than mono/stereo differences, the 45 edits out 0:10 to 0:13 of the stereo LP version. At first, this seems like another one of those "why bother?" edits, but I can see why they did it. If you count measures of music, the full length version has 10 measures in the first half the intro. Typically, the number of measures in any given section of a song (in 4/4 time) would be evenly divisible by 4 (and obviously 10 is not).
As a side note, I had forgotten about how great this song is!

The 45 single though does have a unique mono mix. It's not a fold down and has more powerful low bass. If there are two different 45 issues, would not be the first time with The Chambers Brothers.

And maybe the mix is what makes the vocals stand out more.
On the stereo mix, the vocals sound buried.
