The stereo version I have from "The Brill Building Sound" is indeed missing
the first line of the second version, however it is not missing two bars of the
instrumental break. I suspect other short stereo versions would be the
same.

The (2:47) to (2:51) mono versions in the database are labeled correctly as
missing the instrumental bars.

Database needs a small update for the short stereo version.

Interesting that the sole appearance of the correct mono version is on only
one CD: "Best Of Tragedy".

It strikes me as quite odd as to why there are two bars missing from the instrumental break on so many CDs containing the Shangri-Las "Leader of the Pack". Was there damage on the master tape that led to those bars being edited out? And did the Best of Tragedy CD (which I believe was mastered by Steve Hoffman) have access to a different tape source, or did he manually insert the missing bars from a vinyl source?

Is the version mentioned in the first post (missing first line in second verse, additional two bars in the instrumental break) available anywhere else besides "The Brill Building Sound"? It's 4 CD's and I have the majority of what's on there already. Thanks in advance for any information.

thecdguy:

I assume you mean stereo issues, as it's on a ton of CDs in mono.
According to the database, in addition to Brill Box, it's on:

Thanks for that information, davidclark. I thought I might have had the K-Tel CD, because I have the others in that series: "Wacky Weirdos", "Tacky Tunes" and "Silly Songs", but apparently I never got around to buying "Goofy Greats".

I wonder if the missing bars (and the missing "one day my dad said find someone new" line) made its way to a 45 (or a reissue 45).
I would swear I've heard that version on radio when I was growing up (I wasn't yet born when it was current, but the station I
frequented [WLS] played it as an oldie, and I'm 99% sure that's the version they played).

It could explain how it made its way to CD.

Doug, when Red Bird Records folded in 1966, Mercury quickly signed the Shangri-Las and released The Golden Hits Of The Shangri-Las that same year. That's where the "one day my dad said find someone new" line first went missing. That meant one of two things:

1) She did end up having to find someone new, so the line was no longer needed.

2) The line and the bars in question, along with one sock, went missing after the Leader took his load to the laundromat. Those dryers will do it to you every time!

Given that all Red Bird stock left the retail pipeline within two years of "Leader" being a hit, with the song's subsequent availability being only either the Mercury Golden Hits Of LP or the likewise-edited Mercury Celebrity Series reissue 45, that's all there was for radio stations to get their hands on for the next two decades.

As for why the line was cut in the first place, I hope the person responsible soon had to find someone new... to work for. My college station hosted a couple of "Back To The '50s and '60s" dances at the student union during the early '70s, and the highlight of both was a student named Jill, who quickly became known as "The Leader Of The Pack Girl" after grabbing a mic and absolutely nailing pantomiming to the record.

Unfortunately, the version our music director had in his collection was the Mercury Golden Hits album, and Jill became visibly flustered when the missing "find someone new" line threw her off. That was also the first time I'd ever heard the alteration and wondered if the record had skipped or been bumped.

There are two different edits, the one that appears in stereo all over the place
and is missing the line "one day my dad said find someone new" while the
other in mono is missing two bars of the instrumental bridge.

So, on "The Golden Hits Of The Shangri-Las" stereo version I assume it the
"my dad" edit. What about the mono issue of that LP? Anyone have it? When
did that mono edit turn up?

According to the database the complete stereo version of
"Leader Of The Pack" is on "Very Best Of Red Bird/Blue
Cat Records" issued on Taragon 1029. This disk has all
but one track in stereo from the original 4 track
session tapes. The reason I say complete because the
actual 45 time is listed as 2:59, and on this release
the running time is 2:58. I have the CD but have not
pulled it to verify the information, but I trust the
database here. If you are a fan of the Red Bird label,
or girl groups this is a must have.
