Does anyone out there know if the *true* 45 mix/edit of Sanatana's "Evil Ways" exists on CD?
As far as I recall the 45 mix had Gregg Rolie's lead vocals blended in the center channel while the the album mix had the vocals spread out left-to-right.
Anybody have the original single handy?

I have the Columbia stereo/mono promo 45 and the vocals are in the center.

Are you saying that the actual 45 isn't the version found on the Soundtrack For A Century box set (and the separate release of the double CD it was on--I forget which one off the top of my head)? It runs the 45 length and seems to match the edits properly, but I'm not sure of the mix.

Hi Doug,
I own that double CD from 'Soundtrack For A Century'; while the edits are similar to the 45, I remember the mix being quite like Gary Mack & I described.
P.S. Thank you Gary for pulling out your old 45 & checking the mix for me.

It doesn't surprise me that Soundtrack For A Century has the wrong version. They also messed up "Carry On Wayward Son" as mentioned in another thread.

Aaron, both sides of the Columbia Hall Of Fame series reissue 45 (33185) of "Evil Ways" / "Jingo" were mono, matching their respective A-side stock copy releases. The only stereo appearance of "Evil Ways" on 45 was on the DJ 45, with a matrix number of JZSS 152122 (the mono side of the DJ 45, the stock 45 and Hall Of Fame reissue all bore matrix number ZSP 152121.)
As long as we're on the subject, these two subsequent Santana Hall Of Fame reissue 45s were also mono on each side (all four titles had appeared in stereo on their respective original stock 45s):
33195 - "Black Magic Woman" / "Oye Como Va"
33211 - "Everybody's Everything" / "No One To Depend On" (3:15 length)

Thanks for reviving the topic. I still haven't found the stereo single mix on CD or download, but I did find it on the original vinyl lp of 'Santana's Greatest Hits'.

My stereo/mono promo 45 has a listed time of 2:35, whereas
my promo copy of the original Greatest Hits LP
release shows a 3:00 run time. I haven't timed any of
them, however. How do those compare to the stock single?

To save me the trouble of digging out my copy, how does the timing of the stereo side compare to the mono side? Never noticed a difference just casually listening.

Here are my timing results:
stock 45
Pitman pressing. "ZSP 152121-2E"
Terre Haute pressing. "ZSP 152121-2C"
Both have a listed time of (2:35) and actual time of (2:58)
mono/stereo DJ 45
Terre Haute pressing. Listed times on both sides are (3:01)
mono: "ZSP 152121-2C" actual time (2:58)
stereo: "ZSS 152122-2C STEREO" actual time (2:59)
(My vinyl Santana's Greatest Hits LP is the quad version; actual time of (4:02) with the unique cold ending mentioned in an earlier thread.)

I actually did a double-take when I saw 3:01 listed on the label. Didn't all the record companies have some unwritten "mulligan" rule whereby anything that fell within three or four days of the three-minute-mark automatically got a listed time of 2:59? :)
How odd that Columbia would have actually exceeded that sacred three-minute listed limit when the track itself falls two or three seconds short.
Odder still is the very idea that ANY DJ 45 would have a listed time of 3:01!

Thanks to Andy for sending me the correct 45 mix of this.
I had not heard it in many years back when I had the
vinyl Greatest Hits. I thought I'd remembered hearing it
with all the vocals in the center.
After carefully comparing the single to the LP mix, I
feel the CDs in the database labeled as "45 version"
should be updated to "edit of LP version in an
unsuccessful attempt to re-create the 45 version"...or
something like that. I think the mix differences are
enough for this designation.
The 45 has reverb on the vocals that is not present in
the LP mix. All of the percussion is mixed differently,
but the one element that is easy to hear is the cowbell -
it is mixed to the center in the 45 and turned up louder.
There are more small mix differences, too many to list.
I also tried folding the edited LP mix to mono, and while
it's a good wide stereo mix for the LP, in mono it does
not work well (everything sounds distant) and it sounds
nothing like the 45.
