Obviously not a top 40 hit but quite an AOR classic...
I happened to be viewing a 45 of this and i noticed the
listed time is 4:32. I'm puzzled because the LP version
from "October" runs 4:12, the version I am accustomed to.
Does anyone know if the 1980 45 really does run 4:32?

Mark, I will never forget seeing the "Gloria" video on MTV. It was the first
time I ever heard of the band, and I bought the "October" LP the next day.
I believe the 45 you are viewing is Island 94974, "Sunday Bloody
Sunday"/"Gloria". We never got in (or at least I don't have) any promo 45
for this. (BTW, I just bought that 45 on eBay, for 8 bucks-I'll time "Gloria"
for you when it arrives.)
But the Island 94974 stock # does not fit the normal 1983 Island "current
45 release" sequence. The 45 label also says "Originally released Oct. 1,
1983", which is not info Island ever included on their new 45 releases. My
gut is that this 45 release is likely a "Duran Duran" situation, where MTV
airplay resulted in Island U.S. issuing an already 6-month-old track
("Sunday...) and a 2-year-old track ("Gloria") on a 45, for some reason.

It sounds like this might be the live version of "Gloria"
from the "Under a Blood Red Sky" disc, which came out in
1983 and runs around 4:32.

The 45 jimct just bought on eBay is from the mid to late '80s, and was part of Island's "Revival of the Fittest" series - although that does appear to be the one that MMathews saw. In fact, Island issued three U2 singles in this series at that time, all w/ consecutive catalog nos.:
ISLAND 7-94974 "Sunday Bloody Sunday"/"Gloria"
ISLAND 7-94975 "New Year's Day"/"Two Hearts Beat as One"
ISLAND 7-94976 "I Will Follow"/"Pride (In the Name of Love)"
According to some on-line sources, "Gloria" and "I Will Follow" on this series are indeed the live versions from 1983's Under a Blood Red Sky. Not sure about any of the others...

Thanks for the quality details, Eric and 80smusicfreak. I had always thought
that the studio version of "Gloria" was only issued as a 45 internationally. I
had also always thought that 1983's "Two Hearts Beat As One" was U2's first
U.S. 45 release.

Thanks everyone for the golden info!
I went back and looked at the pics a little closer - what
confused me was the publishing date under the title was
1981 and on the left side of the label clearly says "from
the LP "October" ... but closer look and it actually says
(even more confusing) " originally released April 1983 on
the Island LP "October" ... but we know the LP was from
'81..and yes I looked at anotehr listing and it describes
the 45 as the re-issue series and that "Gloria" is the
live version, as eric_a and 80smusicfreak thought.
And yes, Jim, i had assumed it was single in '81 because
it had a video - wrong assumption. The 45 release of the
original version was only overseas.
Thanks again!
MM
