My copy of Tina Turner's Simply The Best greatest hits CD from 1991 had a "RE-1" in the matrix number. That means the disc was reissued at some point. I'd never given it any thought until I found a copy with no "RE-1" in the matrix. Here's what I found:
Original release: 17 tracks. Excellent sound overall.
RE-1 rerelease: 18 tracks! Capitol added "River Deep Mountain High" as track 9, and pushed the rest of the tracks downward! All the other 17 tracks are digitally exactly 1 dB louder than the original release (that's OK, because there was a dB of headroom on all of them.)
Who knew?

Speaking of "River Deep Mountain High" does anyone know
where this 60s classic appears on CD in stereo? This song
has to be one of the 60s' greatest tracks to fail miserably
in the USA (peaked at #88 but hitting the top 5 in the UK).
Definitely one of those "should've been" a much bigger
chart hit.
Is it in stereo on the 2014 "Love Songs" CD compilation?

Thanks for the quick reply Rich. I only have the song on
that 2014 compilation and on the various artists Back To
Mono box set (so I'm still on the hunt for the stereo
version).

The song apparently has generated some buzz over the years
because I've had requests for their version at weddings.

"River Deep Mountain High" appears in stereo on the digital download release of The Essential Phil Spector. Notably, it is in mono on the 2011 CD release (at least, the one I have a rip of).

It only identifies the matrix (master disc) as recut #1, which means there was a problem the previous cut and the engineer did not want to just increment the cut number. Their policies for when to use RE varied. The presence of RE doesn't necessarily mean any previous cuts were used in production. Sometimes they were, sometimes they weren't. We have seen on Discogs there are lots of releases where the only discs that made it out of the plant have the recut matrix.

I just checked and I also have that two CD Essential
compilation with the mono version. Thanks for the heads up
that the digital download release includes the track in
(((STEREO))).

Where can this stereo download release be found? Original
song? Or a later or live version?

I looked for the digital download of Essential on Qobuz,
but this track is one that cannot be played or downloaded.
Not sure if it's available on other platforms in lossless.
Found it on iTunes and it's the original version (but of
course not lossless).

It seems Qobuz is the only store with the album for download, and they indeed make you buy the whole album in order to hear or obtain certain tracks, including that one. The copy I have is probably from Qobuz, but I can't guarantee that.
Anyway, you can listen on Spotify if you want to check it out; it's the stereo version there.

"River Deep..." is found in stereo on Sony/Legacy's 2011 "Wall of Sound: The Very Best of Phil Spector 1961-1966" as
well as on the 2006 Abkco CD release, "Phil Spector's Wall of Sound Retrospective".
