I just spent the last two months or so doing A/B comparisons with every CD version I own of every song that peaked on the Hot 100 in 1982, plus lossless versions from libraries that others have assembled. I was able to assemble a pretty solid library of songs, with (in my opinion) the best-sounding versions of everything. I'll share some of my results, in case you want to hunt down some of the compilations that I used.

From the solid 1982 library, for each song, I identified compilations having comparable sound quality to my preferred version. In this case, "comparable" means a digital clone with a level change, a digital clone with an EQ change, or a version that used the same analog transfer. Adding compression/limiting or noise reduction automatically disqualifies a track from being "comparable".

Then, I rounded up all the comparable versions, and identified all compilations that include 3 or more top 40 hits from 1982 that have sound quality comparable to my preferred version. These are versions that I'd be happy to use in my own library.

Then, I ranked them by number of comparable tracks, in descending order.

What I got is a pretty solid listing of some really good-sounding compilations. Some are remarkably inexpensive, a few are pricey. I couldn't test every disc ever made, of course, but I think I tested most or all of the common compilations that you'll ever be able to find.

Bottom line: if you own any of the discs I list below, you can be assured that the song I list from that disc sounds as good as any copy that I could find on CD.

Rhino's Billboard Top Hits 1982 (1992; 10 tracks, but 9 if you don't want the glitch in "Up Where We Belong")

  • OK, I'm confused. Are you saying the T-L disc has the glitch, or is that the one that "fixed" it?

Well, this wasn't how I planned to post my 1000th, but in the paraphrased words of Yogi Berra, thanks to all who made this night necessary.

    • Time-Life's Solid Gold Soul '80s Rhythm And Grooves (2001)
    • Rhino's 2-CD Video Soul (1995)
    • Varese's Barry Scott's Lost 45s Of The '70s And '80s Vol. 2
    Unless I counted wrong, that's 71 compilations!

I can make a few generalizations:
    • Overall, I prefer the Rhino compilations from about 1992-1996. Bill Inglot tended to do fresh analog transfers from the very lowest-generation source tapes. Buy any Rhino collections released in 1996 or earlier, and you won't be disappointed.
    • The Warner Special Products discs are good overall, but some use source tapes that are higher-generation than the Rhino discs. These include the Razor & Tie and JCI discs, too.
    • The Time-Life discs released around 1994 or later tend to use the same analog transfers as from existing CDs, or use digital clones of existing CDs. In many cases, that's good news, because a lot of those late '80s/early '90s single-artist CDs sound very good. A small number use additional compression. In general, try to find Time-Life discs mastered by Dennis Drake and you'll be very, very pleased - I've seen his name on discs released between 1995 and 2001.
    • EMI's Living In Oblivion series isn't perfect, but it's definitely worth owning.
    • The Madacy discs in the Rock On series released in 1996 and 1998 are excellent. They're almost entirely digital clones of existing CDs. Later Madacy discs, including the Vol. 2 for some years, are pretty bad.
    That's about all I have for 1982.

  • Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 5 1982 (1994, 9 tracks)
  • UP WHERE WE BELONG - Joe Cocker And Jennifer Warnes [differently EQ'd digital clone of Rhino's Billboard Top Hits 1982 (1992), and has same glitch]

  • OK, I'm confused. Are you saying the T-L disc has the glitch, or is that the one that "fixed" it?

The disc I listed also has the glitch. I edited the original post to show it as having the glitch.

The Time-Life disc that fixed it by removing 198 samples is a 2-CD set from 1993 called Body Talk. There's a digital clone of Body Talk on Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 31 Movie Hits Of The '80s (1996). Both are pretty uncommon.

Re: Juice Newton/ The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known). First pressings had a
different mix on the Juice LP. I think early 45 pressings might have had the
LP first mix. It can be identified by more steel guitar audible in the mix and a
few other minor touches. On LP look for F4 or lower deadwax. F6-F7 is
where the later common mix began being substituted.

Thanks, Ron. I have the T-L 1982 disc, and oddly enough I don't hear the glitch (and I'm usually sensitive to things like that).

I wonder if I have a later pressing that might have fixed the glitch.

Just checked all the copies I have of the song.

These have the glitch at 0:14 -
    • Warner Special Products' 3-CD Secret Love (1987)
    • Rhino's Billboard Top Hits 1982 (1992)
    • Warner Special Products' 2-CD Night Songs (1994)
    • Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 5 1982 (1994)
    • Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 4 Together Forever (1996)
These do not have the glitch at 0:14 -
    • Island's 2-CD Island Story (1987)
    • Time-Life's 4-CD Great Love Songs Of The 70's And 80's Vol. 4 Endless Love (1991)
    • Sandstone's Cosmopolitan Vol. 2 (1992)
    • EMI PolyGram Virgin UK's 2-CD Now 1983 (1993)
    • swaitek's 50-CD A List Disc 11 (1994)
    • Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk (1994)
    • Cema's 2-CD Cool Rock (1995)
    • Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 31 Movie Hits Of The '80s (1996)
    • Joe Cocker's Best Of
    • Joe Cocker's Ultimate Collection
My issue of the Time-Life 1982 disc has a matrix number of DIDP-084469 1. It's an original issue; I think I was a subscriber back then. Does your 1982 have a RE-1 or something like that in the matrix number?

Turns out my copy does have the glitch, and I must have done my own fix (and forgot that I had done it).

    Whoopsies.

This is another in a series of glitches I never heard until reading about them here.

I just pulled my Billboard 1982 disc off the shelf, totally expecting to have a hard time hearing the problem area. But, like a slap in the chops, I heard it the first time!

I haven't gotten into spectral analysis yet, but I'm sure I will discover more and more reasons why pop music had such a long list of problems that didn't get fixed before
being released. I can only assume that getting songs out the door and on the charts took priority to audio perfecting techniques.

Thanks to everyone here who devote so much time and energy to all the little things about recording.

O/T at this point, but I discovered recently that I am no longer able to hear 10khz or above. Thanks TM Century for the audio test tones on the old Hitdiscs!

Ron, can you possibly specify which 198 samples of the
glitched 45 version of "Up Where We Belong" were deleted to
eliminate it from the discs that this was done for? (I know
it's an obvious glitch to pinpoint and excise oneself, but if
one wanted to precisely duplicate their chosen edit points?)
    Thanks!

If you have an audio editor that has a click removal tool, that's a better route than deleting. The "glitch" is a pop/click that occurs exactly on the first vocal (on the word "who"). A click remover should take out the click without deleting the music.
