(I've about decided 1981 is the WORST year of the 80s for trying to find promotional single info; if it didn't hit the top of the charts, it is gone AND forgotten.)
Don Felder ALMOST made it into the top 40 with "Heavy Metal ("Takin' A Ride"); it stalled out in October of 1981 at #43.
This image suggests the 7" version (or at least the radio version) was noticeably shorter than the LP version, which ran 5 minutes.
Fading the LP version at 3:34 seems plausible, but I'd sure love confirmation from someone with an actual copy of the single: was the single version of this song simply an early fade?

Hi, Gene.
The single was an edit, not a fade. A couple of edits, in fact. For example, the faded-in portion of the intro is about half as long, and then it cuts right to the guitar passage at (:40) of the LP version. Not exactly sure where the other edit(s) come(s) in--I'd have to listen more closely. But for sure it's not just an early fade.
ETA: Couple more edits--a small one that removes a "heavy metal" lyric from (2:01) to (2:10), and a larger one that cuts out the section from (3:25) to (4:09) of the LP version (that one's a little clunky).
