The database currently has no CD single information for "Expression," and I have two different promo CD singles:
NPCD50101
1. Half-Step (printed 4:04; actual 3:54)
2. No Shorts (printed 5:17; actual 5:15)
3. Acappella (printed 1:16; actual 1:11)
4. Instrumental (printed 4:04; actual 3:54)
5. Bonus Beats (printed 1:30; actual 1:37)
(Tracks 6 & 7 are the Vocal & Instrumental versions of "Clubhouse")
NPCD50101 (matrix has "RE-1")
1. Brixton Radio - UK Remix (printed 4:49; actual 4:46)
2. Half-Step Radio (printed 4:04; actual 3:54)
3. No Shorts (printed 5:17; actual 5:15)
4. UPSO Radio - UK Remix (printed 3:50; actual 3:41)
(Track 5 is the Vocal version of "Clubhouse")
As far as I can tell, "Half-Step" and "Half-Step Radio" are the same as the LP version.
Pat currently lists all 3:53-3:54 versions as "LP Version"; however, it appears that both the vinyl 7" single and cassette single have this version as the A-side (which would mean the designator should be removed). The Brixton Radio Remix is listed as the B-side of the single, and Pat currently has the "Blitz" CD designated as "45 version." Can anyone confirm if the 7" and/or cassette single actually contain this remix as the A-side?

my commercial cassingle issued as next plateau 329
contains
two tracks
1-brixton radio (exclusive u.k. remix) (4:49 listed; 4:46
actual)
2-half step (4:04 listed; 4:03 actual)
this is the way it is listed on the front of the
cassingles' sleeve....the cassingle's face doesn't list
the
sides as a-side and b-side but as 'live it' and 'learn
it'
sides.....

Which do you consider to be the "hit" version? I don't remember it
getting any top 40 airplay in my area.
Also, what accounts for the extra 10 seconds on the "Half Step" version
on your cassette? As mentioned above, the promo CD only runs 3:54,
like most database CDs.

I picked up the Yo! MTV Raps 2 CD from 1991 on Jive records which contains "Expression" with the notation "(Half Step)", and it definitely matches the album version BUT it has a nasty undercurrent of tape "buzzing" running throughout.
I'd assume this is a result of the mastering done for this particular compilation, but I wanted to ask if any of you have come across this particular buzzing issue on other releases of the track.

aaron...i would consider the track that is listed first on
the cassingle as the 'hit' version.......so in my mind it
would be the 'brixton radio' version......i never heard the
song on the radio at the time either, so i couldn't tell
you which version got most airplay.....as far as the extra
0:10 difference between the 'half step' version i don't
know.....send me an mp3 of your 3:54 version for my
comparison....

In most cases, yes, the hit version is the one listed first and on the A-side of the single; however, we've seen several instances where the B-side was truly the "hit." What I mean by "hit" is which side was the most popular version of the song--the one most listeners would be familiar with.

Since no one has mentioned the 7" (just the cassingle),
The "live it" side, containing the "half-step" version
has a listed timing of 4:40 but an actual of 3:54.

Thanks, Chuck! If you had to pick a "hit" side of your 45, what would it be? I'm taking a poll ;)

For what it's worth, AT40 played the half-step version.
That's the only time I recall hearing it on the radio.
The "45" has written in the matrix: KF-329-"live-it" -
(crossed out B) A - DMS - Herbie Jr. for the Half-step
side. KF-329-"learn-it"-B - DMS - Herbie Jr. for the
Brixton Radio remix side. The B on the learn it side
appears to be written over an A.

aaron sent me an mp3 of his 3:54 'half step' version and it
matches my commercial cassingle exactly, EXCEPT, the
pitch.....the cassingle is pitched down to run 4:03......so
it's quite a difference of 0:09 over a 4:00 song....now, i
would think it was my cassette deck that was the issue, but
since the cassingles sleeve lists the run time as 4:04,
it's probably NOT my cassette deck....bizarre!

Ed, I highly doubt it's your cassette deck, given the fact that the "Brixton Mix" matches the promo CD single timing exactly. I wonder if, perhaps, they accidentally mastered it at the wrong speed at first (which would match the printed time), but they caught the error before they pressed the CD, 12" and 7" and simply forgot to make the correction for cassette singles.
