Has the DJ promo remix made any appearances on CD or in any
digital form?

Also, was the commercial length or the promo remix
considered the "hit" version on the radio? I'm thinking I
may have heard both, with my favorite local top 40 playing
the remix.

I discovered last night the commercial length is actually
more than just an early fade... I may not get a chance
until Sunday, but I will plan to make the edits to the LP
version and post the results here.

I was looking at this song in the database and there aren't any version
designations despite there being wildly different timings on a number of
CDs.

I assume all of the CD appearances running 3:47-3:49 are the commercial
45/short dj 45 version. I also assume all of the 4:20-4:21 appearances are
the LP version.

Do the CDs running 4:04 contain the remixed long dj 45 version?

I have in my notes that the version on Rhino's Disco Years Vol. 4 (1992) includes the edit that's in the 45 but keeps the LP fade, and as a result, runs about 17 seconds longer than the 45.

This would be consistent with other tracks on the Disco Years set, where Bill Inglot found some fantastic-sounding source tapes, recreated the edits that formed the 45 version, and let the song run out to the fade on the LP version. "Le Freak" does the same thing.

So technically, this version of "Fresh" on Rhino's Disco Years Vol. 4 (1992) is previously unreleased, but it's safe to label it as "17 seconds longer than the 45 version".

There's a differently-EQ'd digital clone of the Disco Years version on Time-Life's Solid Gold Soul Vol. 26 Mid-'80s (2000). I wouldn't be surprised if the other 4:04 versions are also based on the Disco Years mastering, but I can't confirm.

Was doing a little digging on the board and came across this topic. The 45 promo remix itself has not been released on CD; however, it’s a direct edit (with an out-of-sequence chorus fly-in IIRC) of the common 12” Remix. I have the 12" mix on Kool & the Gang’s ‘Funk Essentials: The 12” Collection and More’: https://www.discogs.com/Kool-The-Gang-The-12-Collection-And- More/release/1104763

I used a promo 45 rip on YouTube to make the edit, but I can share my file as a guide if needed.

A word of caution: There are two different period 12" remixes for "Fresh". The common one that you can use to re-create the promo 45 remix is a pretty basic affair, and runs close to 5:50. You can recognize it quickly because it starts out with a full 4/4 beat, no dubbing around.

The alternate is remixed by Mark Berry and runs 6:25 -- lots of additional drum machine overdubs and echo delay going on. You can spot this version quickly because it begins in a pretty sparse manner and then builds up to the song you're familiar with. This one is a great '80s remix, but it clearly is not the same mix as the promo edit.

Did we ever determine if the LP Edit or the Edit Remix was what radio spun at the time?

I'm seeing both versions on promos in the USA.

The LP Edit was 880 623-7 DJ (2-58092)
The Edit Remix was PRO 352-7 (2-58140)

Does anybody know if the "DJ" designation on the LP Edit and the "PRO" designation on the Edit Remix tells us anything about where each 7" single might have been sent? Did one go to clubs and the other to radio?

The Edit Remix is only 10 seconds longer (according to the labels) and I want to make sure I'm playing what radio played.

Hi Gene,

I'm reasonably sure that the version played varied
dependent upon MD/PD choice; I don't think there was a
consensus.

I know in my market the LP edit was the version played, but
radio in my area at that time was generally not pro-dancey
remixes...
