The 3:35 version on Rhino's Have A Nice Day Vol. 15 (1990) is from vinyl. There's a digital clone on Time-Life's 2-CD Singers And Songwriters Vol. 18 Hard To Find Hits (2002; 0.021 dB quieter).
The 3:44 version on Reader's Digest Music's 4-CD American Pie Great Tales And Sagas In Song (1998) is a rerecording, and is from a tape source.

So after all these years, has a tape source for "Rocky" ever been unearthed? Or has there at least been a better vinyl
transfer made? It seems the Rhino Have A Nice Day transfer has been utilized for every CD it appears on (excluding the
rerecordings, of course) and that transfer seems to suffer from some groove distortion and the vinyl source might have been
a bit off-centre as well.

Does the Rocky album on Qobuz use the same transfer?

Yes, I did a transfer from a near mint LP back in 2007 and cleaned it up. I'm not sure if any officially released CDs have attempted a better transfer than the Rhino dub.

I know the son of the president of Private Stock Records (Larry Uttal) threw
out all the master tapes from storage in the early '80s because he didn't want
to spend any more money and saw no future usage for the tapes. But here's
what I don't get. Not only did Rocky go (approximately) top 20 in the UK, but I
just learned that it went top 10 in Canada. Did the tapes for Private Stock get
thrown out in those countries, too? Obviously, they'd be 2nd gen tapes sent
originally, but still. It's hard to believe with top 10 hits in Canada and top 20 in
the UK, there hasn't been a compilation CD in these countries with this song
from tape. I know the UK comps use bad vinyl. But are there any Canadians
here that can check any comp CDs for "Rocky" and if a tape was used?

PS, like Aaron, years ago I also did a cleaning of my vinyl LP, which was in
really good condition, so if anyone wants something better than Rhino....

Yes, EdisonLite (and aaronk), if you could share your cleaned up dubs, I'd be
interested!
