Naturally I did a search and came up empty, so that means there's a thread here somewhere.

Does the 45 have the clunky edit as heard on the original CD version of the Hollies' Greatest Hits, or was the edit a much smoother transition? (I seem to recall
Tom Daly creating a "repaired" 45 version making an edit in a slightly different place from the LP version.) The 45 isn't on YouTube--first place I checked.

Thx!

Yes, Doug. The clunky edit is the real 45 version.

That edit puzzled me because I too found if you simply make the edit 1 beat later, it's really smooth and doesn't chop off his reverb from the last word. You'd think the folks who edited it might play it back and say "oh, look what we did there, that sounds odd, let's fix it" but, nope.

"Long Dark Road" was one of the first 45 replications I ever attempted. I kept the original edit point, but added a reverb trail at the end of the first segment before paste-mixing the second segment over it.

The same approach worked well with the Five Americans' "Zip Code." Having never heard the unedited version before, I hadn't really noticed the abrupt edit on the mono 45. In stereo, the reverb falling off the cliff at the edit point stuck out way too much.

To be sure, it isn't 100% authentic, but it keeps this customer satisfied. ;)

Yeah, that one just jumped out at me first time I played it
on the air back in '72. And just to save :06 or so.
Surprised they used it on the GH album & CD when they used
the long version of "Long Cool Woman".
