I had no idea an other compilation was coming out, but to celebrate 50 years you can either buy one CD, a 2 CD set or a 3 CD set of his "Ultimate Hits". But
even if you buy all three CDs you won't get the original "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me", "Levon" or "Friends". And songs he didn't write like "Lucy in the
Sky with Diamonds" or "Pinball Wizard" are on , you guessed it, CD 3. All are LP Versions, "Lucy" is 6:16 on the label. Decent sound from what I can tell from
Amazon Music.

Philadelphia Freedom sounds like a different mix from other CD issues that I have on the song, and it's not
the "Superior Sound of Elton John Mix". Of the many small differences that I hear (lower flute, louder
guitar at points) at 42 seconds before the songs is over (on how Amazon Music gives me timing) you can hear
that the mixer potted back up Elton's main vocal too soon, so the word "do" sneaks through, which I don't
hear on the other CDs that I have.

I wish they had included all his top 40 hits, especially "Ego" (which I read once in an Elton John interview is one of his favorite songs and he wished had peaked higher) instead of some of the later stuff included, which really didn't make an impact on radio. Too bad they didn't use the single versions.

Otherwise, it's a nice set :)

How many songs did Elton have a separate single version for? The great majority of his hits I believe the 45 and the LP were the same, although
radio stations were known to make their own edits (or, in a case like "Bennie And The Jets" cue the record forward about 13 seconds :) ).

I definitely prefer the single edits of "Sad Songs (Say So Much)" & "Empty Garden". But you're right - they're aren't too many, I suppose.

At least the edit of "Sad Songs" is gettable, and "Empty Garden" can be extracted.

"Your Song" probably stands out as the one major hit in which the 45 version won't surface (since it's a mix difference rather than an edit).

I wasn't aware he re-did any of these (not counting the
George Michael duet on DLTSGDOM).
Or are they live versions?

I think what Bill meant was that those three hits are not included. The
"original" was for DLTSGDOM only--to clarify which "hit" he was
referring to.

Yes, I should have put in the word "or" before Levon. I suppose they didn't want two versions of "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" on the set so they chose
the George Michael one.

As far as mixes, I believe that all 45s on Uni before "Tiny Dancer" were dedicated mono mixes and I don't believe that those mixes have ever been re-issued
digitally. As previously noted in other strings, "Your Song" has more reverb in the second half of the song on the 45. "Levon" has a more aggressive mono mix
for the 45 where the piano is boosted or reduced at various points in the song. I believe that "Border Song" and "Friends" are also mono mixes but less
noticable.

Bill, the Uni 55246 DJ and stock copies of "Border Song" were apparently all stereo, whether or not they stated "Compatible Stereo" on the label (my Uni stock copy does.)

The original-issue Congress 6022 45 had "Border Song" in stereo on both sides of the DJ copies. My Congress stock copy is mono (as is the non-LP "Bad Side Of The Moon" on the flip), so this appears to have been the only mono appearance of either song.

The "Friends" 45 was, indeed, mono.

Yes, good catch, both of my copies of "Border Song" are also in stereo. I was confusing it with "Take Me To The Pilot" the B side of "Your Song".

I was disappointed also with the sound of this
collection. But not to include "Levon" or "Friends" and
even "Ego" is a poor choice on whoever put this set
together. I could care less about the version of "Don't
Let The Sun" included here. You put out a
"supposed"collection of Elton's best, then it should be
exactly that! Learn a lesson from other compilations of
recent years and how good those were (Grass Roots,
Stephenwolf, Mamas And Papas, and many others) and give
fans something to remember the artist by!
