I meant to bring this up a long time ago, because there is no mention in the database...

I have the song "One Thing Leads To Another" by the Fixx on several compilations, and there are at least three slight variations on the different CDs.

The version found on the Like Omigod! box set, starts with four "hi-hat" hits before the song starts. (I'm calling it a hi-hat, although it's more electronic sounding than anything. It's the same sound found throughout the entire song.)

The version found on Pure 80s and Classic MTV: Class of 1983 does not have these four opening percussion hits.

The version found on Only Dance: 1980 - 1984 is also missing the opening percussion; however, it has a faster speed than the previously mentioned versions.

Can anyone help distinguish between these three?

The version of "One Thing Leads To Another" that you mentioned on the Rhino "Like Omigod.." box set is the original hit single mix. The first time that mix first appeared on CD was on The Fixx Ultimate Collection CD released in 1999. Before then every compilation that contained this song used the LP mix from "Reach The Beach" which doesn't have the "hits" at the beginning. The 45 mix is actually an edit of the extended 12" mix. The full version runs exactly 8:00, and is on the reissue CD of "Reach The Beach". Prior to it's release on CD the only places it could be found were on an UK Import 12", and a US promo only 12" pressed on see through blue vinyl. Comes in a white die cut 12" sleeve with a title sticker at the top. The US promo also has the single edit, and "The Sign Of Fire" on the B-side.

My commercial 45 (MCA 52264) has the four "hi-hat" hits, and is
listed on the label, and actually times out to, 3:23. On the label, it
also states Remixed Edited Version.
The version on Greatest Hits - One Thing Leads To Another
(MCA 42316) does not have the "hi-hats" at the beginning, and, to
my ears, the vocals have a different echo or reverb on them, but is
not sped up. The version on Like Omigod!... sounds like the 45
mix.

my 45 issued as mca 52264 and stating the "remixed edited version" runs 3:23 and is identical to the version from the "ultimate collection" cd issued as Hip-O 088112117.....with the 4 synth high hats at the start...

The folks at Rhino who put together the Like Omigod!... box set look like they went to great lengths to include 45 versions when applicable. There are only a couple of songs on that entire set where the 45 versions were not used.
