Time-Life "Legendary Country Singers" series, Patsy Cline to be exact.
I'm not 100% sure if this is a question for this group, but I'll give it a shot.
As I pull a lot of old CDs out of storage and put them into new more visible and accessible storage, I've been listening to a few here and there.
Just to note, I haven't got anything high end hooked up yet. Just a PC and a pair of Sony bluetooth headphones at the moment.
Of all the information printed on the disc insert, I see that MCA produced this disc with a Time-Life number of R990-05 MSD 35769. (1995)
On track 12 titled, "Imagine That" I noticed there was a lot of noise in one channel at a few spots. First at 00:05 and again at 00:10 - 00:12.
It sort of sounds like a crackly pot in the mix. I'm wondering if anyone else has a copy of this CD and could tell me if I just have a bad disc.
I would explain that I can't accurately tell which channel it is coming from as I can't seem to find a setting or any way to have the PC tell me
which side is which. The phones say it's the right channel but, I've already posted in another thread that these are not labeled L or R.
I went to youtube and looked up the song and noted that the copy they had didn't have the crackles like mine, but may have also been a mono copy.
I don't have the link handy, sorry. I also have a sealed copy that I don't want to open for a test.
I have been reading that some Time-Life stuff has a pretty good reputation here though, some stuff doesn't. Is this Legendary Country Singers a series that
generally has a good reputation? I thought I would ask and see if anyone had time to sample their copy, (If they own one.)

This is most definitely an appropriate place to ask such a question!
I'm a giant fan of the Time-Life discs, and I had honestly never heard of this series. Fortunately, Discogs had a page for this release, with detailed scans of all the booklet pages. I found the important detail in the booklet: Bill Inglot worked on this disc, and that's really all you need to know. Because he was responsible for the sound, I can guarantee that this will be the most stellar collection of Patsy Cline stuff that you'll ever find.
I don't know who mastered any of the other discs in this series. Overall, they seem to be some superb collections.
In general, the Time-Life stuff is excellent, especially discs released between about 1995 and about 2002. The sound quality is top-notch, and the track selection is unequaled on compilation discs. More recent Time-Life discs have also been terrific, but they tend to rehash a lot of the same tracks from earlier Time-Life releases.
Still, there are occasional noise errors. I know that Steve Miller's "Abracadabra" has a little burst of static at the beginning of the song on one of the Time-Life collection.
I can confirm that there's no static of "Imagine That" on Time-Life's Country U.S.A. Vol. 3 1962 (1988). Because Bill Inglot was involved with your disc, it's possible that he unearthed better source tapes than the 1988 release.

Thanks for the location note on Country U.S.A. I have that series too but, haven't unpacked it yet. I'll look for that copy and compare.
I just looked on ebay and they have a number of copies up for grabs, some sealed. I might just pick one up to see if this particular disc is just shot.
I haven't noticed any other issues yet but, if I pull out any other artists, I'll be listening more closely.
The only one I don't have but, hopefully will soon is the Charley Pride.

Try ripping with a program that uses Accuraterip to determine if you're getting the 0's and 1's that are really on the disc. I recommend EAC or dbpoweramp for the PC; not sure if there's a Mac equivalent. Rip the track, and see if you still hear the noise in the ripped file.

I have dBpoweramp on a dedicated PC for doing music stuff. (Currently getting set up again.) I had a friend gift me a Focusrite sound interface a few months ago, which also needs to be set up. I don't know if that
will give a better sound in general. Hopefully, I will be able to utilize all it's potential.
I'll note at this point that I did ripp the whole disc to .Wav and, that's where I noticed the problem. Both the .Wav file and just playing the disc in traditional CD fashion have the same result. In many cases,
I will frequently listen to a disc while I'm entering track information. This one is already in the database that fills the fields. So I had a little time to listen more closely. Otherwise, I'd have probably missed the error.
dBpoweramp is a great suggestion!
I also did a bit of searching about the artist while listening. I frequently do that too. Such a tragic story! I always liked her singing, even as a kid. But, she met her demise when I was only 3!

I have the above 4 in my collection. All are excellent
sounding discs and are worth seeking out either as an
overview to the individual artists (even if you may
have other discs by them, the selection of tracks is
often unique enough to warrant grabbing them up).
The noises on the track in question are present on the
master tape (most likely caused by a noisy pot in the
board that went unnoticed).
The upside to the Patsy Cline volume is it is one of
the few readily available compilations of her work that
contains some of the original stereo mixes presented in
un-narrowed form. A large number of Patsy Cline
MCA/Universal discs
are narrowed for whatever reason.
The 2004 Universal set, The Definitive Collection
contains a number of these narrowed stereo mixes but it
also contains "Imagine That" with the noises fixed by
mastering great, Doug Schwartz. However, the L/R
channels on this CD are reversed from the TimeLife disc
for this particular song. What the proper L/R setup for
it would be is unknown to me.
Both Definitive and the TimeLife sets are still highly
recommended by me for anyone that wants to get an
instant Patsy Cline education.

I have this whole set - excellent sound on the set. I'll
have to pull out the Patsy Cline cd and listen to it when
I get a minute.

I have this on my copy of the cd as well - so I don't think you have a bad cd - it is on Time Life's end when they put these out.

I am considering looking around the forum for a few more oddities in the recordings. I'm also likely to start a few other posts with information like this to see if anyone is interested in recording anomalies.
I'm also going to look for some of the stuff that seems to plague me from time to time, like CD rot. Aaron and I have had a few discussions about that and, I'd like to know if I can find solutions to this or,
if there are any machines that seem to work better with problematic discs. I also have questions about CD burning, though the subject might be moot these days with all the digital storage becoming so cheap.

CD rot progresses until a disc is unreadable. PDO in
England manufactured a bunch of these in the early 90's
but most would be 'rotted out' by now. Only other way
something similar would happen is if a sticky substance
was spilled on the front and when wiping off you took a
layer off. That did happen to me once. Scratches on
label side are detrimental and do cause skipping.
