OK, we need to talk about this one. :-D

The 7" label (commercial 45 and promo) lists a running time of 3:26.

1) I have a version running 3:29 that indicates it's from "Greatest Hits." It has a 26 second intro and a clear edit at 3:09 on the word "Love," and fades.

2) I have another version running 3:36 that indicates it's from "Thompson Twins - The Greatest Hits." It has a 17 second intro, chopping the music once the whole band comes in, in half. This one appears unedited at 3:09, and fades.

3) I have a third version running 3:51 that indicates it's from "Time-Life Europe / The 80s Collection Vol. 14 / 1983 Alive & Kicking disc 2." It has a 26 second intro, no edit at the end, and fades later than either of the other two versions.

4) I have a fourth version running 3:57 that indicates it's from "Pop And Wave Vol. 1 disc 2." It has an 18 second intro which is missing the quiet guitar / synth intro of the other three. Were this added back on, this intro would match the 26 second intro on the other two, however the mix is slightly different (extra reverb / echo on some drum hits, echo on occasional vocals) and expanded instrumentally at two locations in the song. This version leaves out the vocals ('cuz you've got love, love, love on your side") from 3:20 to the end and ends cold.

5) Finally, I have a fifth version running 4:01 that indicates it's from "Greatest Hits." (seriously?!?) It has the 26 second intro of the others. It matched the unedited fades of tracks 2 and 3 except it waits even longer to fade.

I have questions. X-D

Were there any differences between the promo single and the commercial 45?

What was the intro length and structure of the promo intro?

Were there any edits at the end of the promo?

how long did the promo run to silence?

I'm certain our board members would like to know this info for the commercial 45 too if different, and if any of these are the LP version.

Thanks in advance for your help! This has been VERY confusing for me.

Gene - This is indeed hard to track. Here's what I know:

UK (Quick Step And Side Kick) LP version
Printed 4:25, actual 3:59

Found on 1996 Greatest Hits CD
Synth intro, full instruments start at 0:10
First verse ("I hear you laughing") starts at 0:27
Fades from 3:43 to 3:59

UK 45 version, US 45 version, and US (Side Kicks) LP version
Printed 3:32, actual 3:34

Deletes 16 beats from 0:14 to 0:23 of the UK LP version
Deletes 32 beats from 3:09 to 3:25 of the UK LP version
Synth intro, full instruments start at 0:10
First verse ("I hear you laughing") starts at 0:18
Fades from 3:18 to 3:34

The US commercial 45 and US promo 45 both have printed times of 3:26. Chuck confirmed below that the US 45 is the same version as the UK 45.

The version on Time-Life Europe's The '80s Collection Vol. 14 1983 Alive And Kicking is the UK LP version faded early.

I have no idea what version is on Sony Germany's Pop And Wave Vol. 1 (1992). It starts without the synth intro and adds a two-beat snare fill before the downbeat. It ends cold (!) at 3:56.

NightAire's #2 (the one on The Greatest Hits) actually runs 3:32.5 (3:36 due to silence on the ends), and it matches the US 45, which runs just a hair slower, 3:32.9.
