Ed, "the Billboard Top Hits 1986" version does indeed run (3:31). Just listened to it. If there is a certain part of the song you would like me to concentrate on to determine, as you say, the "true" 45 version, I'll be glad to "listen for it" for you.

jim was kind enough to forward me an mp3 of the song "take me home tonight" by eddie money from the cd "billboard top hits:1986" and it is identical to the 45 version.......the version from the cd "sounds of money" runs about 0:03 shorter than the 45 and should be noted in the db.......

It may be just my ears... I have problems with all versions of "The Locomotion" by Grand Funk Railroad and nobody else hears it... but does anybody else feel like all their copies of this song sound like either the tape is warped or the record was off-center or something?
I have at least 4 different sources for this song, and that all seem to weave and dodge through the song with the pitch warbling flat, to sharp, and back again.
It drives me crazy, but I don't know if anybody else hears it or if there's a copy out there that DOESN'T sound that way... the original 45 may have had the same issue, although I didn't notice at the time...
EDIT: I hear it in the video, too, so it's either my weird ears, or it's always been in the master tapes...

Gene, I'm not sure if this was meant for the Eddie Money thread or not,
but I do agree with you. Grand Funk's recording of "The Locomotion"
does sound off-key in many places, mainly the vocals. I have always
assumed that this was intended and not a flaw with the recording. Why
they would purposely sing off key, though, is something I don't know.

I remember hearing a story on American Top 40 about this
song WAAAAYYYY back. If I remember the story correctly
(and it's always possible), after recording the track, the
tape got tangled up during playback. They straightened out
the tape and played it again...
And actually liked the distortion caused by the messed up
tape, and decided to keep it that way.
At least, that's how I remember Casey telling the story.
