pat
i just listened to the song "edge of heaven" by wham! and it sounds like mono on both the 45 and the version from the cd "the final"......the 45's face states that the song is in stereo but sounds like mono, maybe it's just very narrow stereo sepration......sounds mono though......also....the song actually runs to the 4:30 mark and then the 45 has about 0:07 worth of noise (howls, drum sticks dropping and chatter) at the end...so the full run time is 4:37........the version in the db looks like it edited the last 0:07 of noise off.....pat, can you confirm that....lmk edtop40......

The version on Music from the Edge of Heaven and at least one pressing of The Final has the ending clipped off.
There's studio chatter at the end of the 45, ending in, "Who got this [unintelligible]...eh?" My old edition of The Final contained the complete 45 version, however, when my CD wallet (with that in it) got stolen and I replaced it, the newer pressing cut off the word "eh."
I think The Final cuts off at "Who got this--"
On the subject of George Michael, the ending of "Father Figure" on his "Faith" album is smashed up against "I Want Your Sex," so the last second or two of the fadeout is truncated. The song runs its full length on "Ladies and Gentlemen."
Interestingly, the 45 version, though it does run the full LENGTH of the fadeout, begins fading earlier than the other versions. The fade is "helped along" for some reason.
I have only found it exactly like it the 45 on the original CD single from 1988, which I recently splurged about $70 for on Ebay, since I've been looking for it for 18 years and I decided that was long enough. It also contains the instrumental (which has the orignal full length fade) and the bonus live track "Love's in Need of Love Today." (Beware -- only the UK edition contains the bonus live track... the Japanese CD3 does not.)
"Father Figure" was a bonus track on one of his UK CD singles from the early '90s, but they just took the LP version and faded it before it reached "I Want Your Sex."

On the mono/stereo subject of the song, it is stereo, but narrow indeed.
I checked the track on the following compact discs:
(USA) Music From The Edge Of Heaven
(German) The Final
(German) The Best Of Wham!
It does sound very plain, but there is one standout part where you can tell it is stereo: go to the approximately 3:09-3:10 mark, after he says "I know it!" for the last time, a synthesized sound similar to en electric guitar hits both channels with separation.
On a more subtle scale, there is some percussion on the right channel throughout most of the track starting at approx. 1:07, reappearing each time he sings "Take me to the edge of heaven...".
About the ending, all three tracks are slightly different in the length of those last bits, the version from the album "Music From The Edge Of Heaven" being the shortest.
The "The Final" version is the one that holds out the longest before fading out.
(USA) Music From The Edge Of Heaven 4:31
(German) The Final 4:37
(German) The Best Of Wham! 4:34

Other chat board members beat me to the punch on this one but I agree with everything they have reported. The 45 states a time of (4:37) and I clock it at (4:36) which includes (:12 of sound effects at the end). The version on the cd "Music From The Edge Of Heaven" runs (4:30) and includes :04 of sound effects.

I have the 45 and the CD "Music From The Edge Of Heaven" and they both match in that they both have the yelling at the end.

They all have yelling... it's how long the yelling goes on that's the issue, and unless there are different pressings of Music from the Edge of Heaven (or different pressings of the 45), the yelling cuts off several seconds before it does on the 45.

Missed this one, Ed. Yes, absolutely -- my original CD of "The Final" contained the full 45 chatter at the end, and then when that got stolen, the new one I bought did not.
But I know an import CD3 reissue of Edge of Heaven exists... I'm trying to track that down.

My copy of "The Final" CD has all the sounds at the end of "The Edge Of Heaven", and the music on that track runs for exactly 4:33.

Unless your copy is pitched up, it couldn't contain the full ending, as the full 45 runs (4:36). It sounds like the copy you have cuts three seconds from the ending.

It's not pitched up. Can I send you what I have?

I had forgotten that I had this CD: If You Were There - The Very Best Of Wham. It's a UK import, and "Edge Of Heaven" runs (4:37), although the last second is dead. The sound effects on this CD run to the (4:36) mark, and it sounds like everything is in tact.

That release does indeed have the longest running version of the three CD's I mentioned earlier, I mistakingly switched running times on the last two.
Here it is again.
Thanks Aaron : )
(USA) Music From The Edge Of Heaven 4:31
(German) The Final 4:34
(German) The Best Of Wham! AKA If You Were There 4:37

Ed, I have not, as my 45 of this song is long gone. I am only drawing my conclusions based on the info supplied in this thread.

If it's longer than the version on "The Final," it's the complete 45 version, as only the last word of the chatter is missing from "The Final."

Not only does it have the last word of the chatter, but it also has a few other background noises after the chatter (drumsticks perhaps?).
