According to the 10th edition (pg. 632), there are
currently 12 domestic CDs that feature Laid Back's 1984
hit, "White Horse". Of those, six are listed as the "(45
version)" w/ a running time of (3:48)-(3:52), five are
shown as the "(LP version)" w/ a running time of
(5:43)-(5:44), and the other an undesirable edit of some
sort that clocks in at (4:41)...
I've known for years that there were two versions of the
song - one censored, and one uncensored. The censored
version of course has the word "b*tch" removed in several
spots...
I've never had "White Horse" on CD before, so last week I
went ahead & bought the V/A CD titled "Old School Jams"
on Thump 4200, which is said to feature the "(45
version)". After listening to the CD, I discovered that
it's also the censored version...
I've never owned the 45 of "White Horse", so my question
is this: Are all appearances of the "(45 version)" on CD
the censored version??? And if so, does that
automatically mean that all appearances of the "(LP
version)" are uncensored??? Or is there a mix??? Perhaps
this additional detail could be added to future editions
of the book??? Any info appreciated.

Excellent question. Although I don't have the 45, I can tell you that the 80s Pop Culture Box (Rhino) has an uncensored version (3:53), while a friend of mine has it on 80s Hot Dance Trax (K-Tel) and it IS censored (3:48).
A few weeks ago, I went searching for online listings of the 45 on gemm.com, and the "vocal edit" (censored version) was listed on a DJ/promo copy of the 45. None of the sellers listed "vocal edit" next to commercial copies. If I had to guess, I'd say that commercial copies were uncensored and DJ copies had both versions.
I can tell you this much...the two versions are edited completely different. It's not just that the word "b**ch" is blanked out on the censored version.

Thanks for the additional info, aaronk. It seems there is
indeed a mix out there! Yep, I knew there were additional
differences between the censored and uncensored versions;
I've had both on cassette for years, but would like to
obtain the uncensored full-length (LP) version on CD.
Looks like we'll need Pat's help on this one... :-)

In addition to the CD titles aaronk mentioned, I have "White Horse" on the various artist compilation Mega Hits Dance Classics (Volume 7) (Priority 7983). It runs (3:49) and is the censored version.

I have checked all of the cd's that are listed in the 10th edition and here is what I come up with. The White Horse dj 45 that I own oddly enough includes the word "bitch" several times and appears on the Rhino "80's Pop Culture" box set. There must have been another 45 pressing with the censored version because all other cd appearances of "White Horse" that run 3:48 to 3:52 are censored and are a different edit than the dj 45 that I own. The LP version includes the uncensored lyrics and all cd appearances that I list as being the LP version also feature the uncensored lyric.
So, does anyone have the "White Horse" 45 either commercial or dj that is different from the Rhino "80's Pop Culture" box set version?

I must enter a dditional information that I have received
regarding "White Horse" by Laid Back. The dj 45's had a different edit on each side of the record. One runs (3:52) and is the same as the commercial 45 with the word "bitch" left intact. This is the version that appears only in the US on the Rhino "80's Pop Culture" box set. The other side of the promo 45 is a completely different edit that runs (3:49) and edits out the word "bitch". This version is the version that has appeared most often on compact disc in the US. All LP versions that have appeared on cd in the US are uncensored.

Since "White Horse" has come up in a discussion on another message thread, I thought I'd resurrect this thread for all interested in reading what's been discussed about this song so far. Pat provided an excellent explanation as to which versions appear on his DJ 45 copies, but did we ever come to a consensus as to whether or not multiple pressings of the commercial 45 exist?

A discussion of "White Horse" came up during another thread, so here's what I learned from the two different promo 45s (both, confusingly, Sire 7-29346) and the commercial re-release single, all of which I own:
The original version of the song is on the Sire 12" Maxi Single (0-20178). It's found on Rhino's Phat Trax Vol. 5 (1994, 123.1 BPM). The 12" runs about 5:48, with a bassline that kicks in at 0:30 and vocals that start at 1:03.
The commercial 45 is a fairly straightforward edit of the 12", with bassline and vocals starting where they do on the 12", removing the doubled second chorus, and removing the fake ending. More importantly, it removes the word "b****" and any "rich/b****" exchanges. This is the version that got all the airplay I heard, in the few times I heard it on the air and on American Top 40. On the labels of the promos, this version has "Edited by Bobby Shaw and J.C.", a printed and actual time of 3:49, and the notation "(Edit)".
This is the version on:
- Priority's Mega-Hits Dance Classics Vol. 7 (123.1 BPM)
- Time-Life's Modern Rock 1980-1984 (released 2000, 123.5 BPM; this is the best-sounding version available on CD)
- Commercial 45 (Sire 7-29236; 3:49 printed on label, according to Whitburn book; I don't actually have this one)
- Back-To-Back Hits 45 (Sire GSRE 0495; backed with "Sunshine Reggae", 3:52 incorrectly printed on label, "Edited by Bobby Shaw and John Potoker" incorrectly listed on label, etched matrix number GSRE-0495-BAA-2248-V1-RE1-S-SR1; 123.1 BPM)
- Side "3" of promo 45 (Backed with side "2", 3:49 (Edit) and editing credits correctly printed, etched matrix number 7-29346-BAA-2248-V1-RE1-S-SR3; 123.5 BPM)
- Side "4" of promo 45 (Backed with side "1", 3:49 (Edit) and editing credits correctly printed, "Edited for radio airplay" printed prominently in uppercase bold, etched matrix number 7-29346-BAA-2248-V1-S-DJ-RE1-SR4-3:49; 123.5 BPM)

Nicely summarized! Just to make sure I have this straight, the 45s are as follows:
commercial 45 = censored edit
promo 45 #1 = uncensored edit b/w censored edit
promo 45 #2 = uncensored edit b/w censored edit, but has an "Edited For Radio Airplay" notation on one side

As I stated in another thread, my commercial 45 does include the word "bitch" so there must be two pressings of this 45.

My U.S. commercial 45 is also uncensored, has label number 7-29346, matrix 7-29346 BAA-2248-V1-S-3:52-WW1 and is exactly as crapfromthepast describes a promo edit.

This is the version on the Rhino 80s box.
Has anyone actually seen the censored version on a U.S. commercial 45? I have the 3:49 censored version on a Canadian commercial 45 as the B-side of 'Sunshine Reggae'. I know that 'Sunshine Reggae' exists on a U.S. commercial 45 (Sire 29224), but I don't know if 'White Horse' is its B-side.

my commercial 45 of "white horse" issued as sire 29346 is the "bitch" version and contains "7 - 29346 BAA - 2248 - v1 - s - 3:52 - jw1" in the run out groove....hope this helps.....

To clarify: My Back-To-Back-Hits 45 is censored.
I don't actually own the Sire 29346 commercial 45, and I just assumed it was the censored version as well. No proof in hand, though.
The censored version was definitely the hit, though, and it wouldn't be the first time Sire had a hit with a different version than from the commercial 45, then put the hit on the Back-To-Back-Hits rerelease. (See "Tainted Love" / "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go". I think "Into The Groove" might have also appeared on a re-release.)

Well, in that case, the database accurately shows which versions are the 45 version and which ones are the DJ edit. Either way, it appears that Rhino has included the correct 45 version for the Omigod box set.

I've been a fan of the song for over 22 years, and I just now learned that if I'd bought the 45 when it first came out, I'd have been mighty disappointed. Good thing I picked up the 45 re-release.

After launching this thread ten(!) years ago now, I was re-visiting "White Horse" in Pat's on-line database yesterday and after reading his notes, decided to do some additional research regarding the censored vs. uncensored versions of this song. So the first thing I did was make a quick visit over to Discogs, where I knew I could find some photos of the U.S. 45. Sure enough, they had several there, and I almost immediately spotted one picture that had a couple of key differences, and from there, I was able to solve all of the confusion surrounding the 45 in this country! (Guess I shouldn't have waited a decade to do this, lol...)
It turns out Pat's hunch was right all along. There were indeed TWO DIFFERENT commercial 45 pressings here in the U.S. - one censored and one uncensored, identical to what was found on each side of the promo 45! Problem was, until now, nobody here had ever actually found a commercial copy w/ the censored version - or even knew how to tell the two different pressings apart, visually. But I've managed to unravel the mystery here, and w/o having to actually buy a copy of the 45, or even listen to any... :-)
What makes things somewhat tough/confusing is that BOTH pressings were on Sire 29346, and BOTH pressings featured the song "So Wie So" on the B-side. But armed w/ the 3:49/censored and 3:52/uncensored info from Pat's notes in the db regarding the promo 45, I found photos of a couple copies of the U.S. commercial 45 over at Discogs w/ a printed time of "3:52", when I then clicked on another, which I immediately noticed had a printed time of "3:49" instead! Further comparison w/ the copies labeled "3:52" revealed one other major difference: The "3:49" copies stated "Edited by Bobby Shaw and J.C.", while the "3:52" copies said "Edited by Bobby Shaw and John Potoker" instead. (It was only AFTER I saw these different editing credits that I discovered cftp had brought this same info to light when discussing his promo 45 above back in 2007.) Here are the pages on Discogs for the promo 45 and the two different commercial 45s, all w/ pictures:
LAID BACK - "White Horse" (U.S. promo 45 w/ both versions)
LAID BACK - "White Horse" (U.S. uncensored commercial 45)
LAID BACK - "White Horse" (U.S. censored commercial 45)
So bottom line: If you're looking for a commercial/stock copy of the U.S. 45 w/ the censored version of "White Horse", just look for a printed time of "3:49" at the center right of the label, and the "Edited by Bobby Shaw and J.C." credit at the upper left (as well as "So Wie So" on the B-side, of course). And if you want a commercial/stock copy w/ the uncensored version, look for a printed time of "3:52" and the "Edited by Bobby Shaw and John Potoker" credit instead (still w/ "So Wie So" on the B-side). Side note: Only promo copies of Sire 29346 feature the notation "(Edit)" printed just under the timing for the song...
A check of the current listings on eBay for all U.S. 45s of "White Horse" on Sire 29346 reveals 13 copies of the uncensored version, and FOUR copies of the censored version. So while less than scientific, it appears that the ratio of copies pressed was in the neighborhood of 75/25, in favor of the uncensored version. For those who want one, here are the four CENSORED copies currently shown on eBay:
Copy #1: LAID BACK - "White Horse" (U.S. censored commercial 45)
Copy #2: LAID BACK - "White Horse" (U.S. censored commercial 45)
Copy #3: LAID BACK - "White Horse" (U.S. censored commercial 45)
Copy #4: LAID BACK - "White Horse" (U.S. censored commercial 45)
Of course, once Pat gets his hands on a censored commercial copy, some revisions to the db will be necessary. For starters, he'll need to change the last part of his note at the top that reads "commercial 45's were all the uncensored (3:52) version". Also, all CD appearances currently labeled "(censored lyrics dj 45 edit version)" can be changed to "(censored 45 edit version)", while those labeled "(uncensored commercial and dj 45 version)" can be simplified to "(uncensored 45 version)"...

I can confirm that the censored version does appear on a commercial 45. I only have one stock copy, and it's the printed & actual 3:49, "edited by Bobby Shaw and J.C." pressing. The matrix number is 7-29346-BAA-2248-V1-RE1-S-WW2. Good catch, 80smusicfreak!

I'm trying to find copy of the completely censored
version of this song that has much less hiss than the 2
copies I have. Ron indicated that, in his opinion, the
best sounding copy of the censored version was on Time-
Life's Modern Rock 1980-1984. Is that the version I need
to locate?
