I've got a few of the above:
Bill Black's Combo - Twist-Her & Ole Buttermilk Sky - "Hi Rollin' - The Story of Bill Black's Combo (1960-65)" - Cream / Hi HEXD-40 - original mono 45 versions
Barbara Mason - Sad Sad Girl - "Yes I'm Ready" - Bear Family BCD-16205-AH - stereo 45 version with surface noise (disc dub)
Tommy Roe - Susie Darlin' - "Something for Everybody - Hits and Rarities" - Golden Sandy Records [CD] GSR-90125
I purchased all of these at our local Circuit City store, so they must have seen legitimate U.S. release at some point.
Ace Records (UK) has several other fifties and sixties sides on its "Golden Age of American Rock & Roll", "Teen Beat" and "Early Girls" series - I picked these all up at my local hippie-run bootleg joint, but I've seen them languishing in the easy listening sections of Best Buy and Circuit City.
I'm sure you're aware of the gray-market Liberty Bell label series of most of the Cameo/Parkway stuff...
Sorry if I'm breaking the rules - just ordered my copy of the book last week.

Personally, I would add Barbra Streisand "The Way We Were" to that list, since the 45 version is a completely different vocal take from start to finish than has ever been released on CD.

Brian, "The Way We Were" is not available in its 45 version on cd as you point out but when I made up this list I included songs as appearing on cd even if it was the original LP version. There are others besides "The Way We Were" that are available in the LP version only and therefore not on the "missing" on cd list above.

"Pieces of Ice" was issued on CD on Diana Ross' "Ross" album from RCA. I'm almost positive it was a U.S. release, though it was pressed in Japan, as all early CDs were. I remember seeing it at Tower Records many times back in the day, and almost buying it. There's a copy right now on Half.com... for a cool $89!
Hopefully the '60s list will go waaaay down once (if) the Cameo-Parkway boxed set comes out, allegedly this spring.

Hi, Grant:
The lists reflect songs that have never appeared on a domestic CD release in any form. Because "Christine Sixteen" has been issued on CD quite a number times in its LP version, it was not included on the list of songs missing on compact disc. Interestingly, Pat acknowledges the actual 45 version run time of "Christine Sixteen" in the 10th edition of his book but doesn't specifically indicate if it's a different mix than the LP version...
"Winners and Losers" by Hamilton, Joe Frank, & Reynolds is actually on the list...
"Soul Train '75" by the The Soul Train Gang doesn't appear as an entry in the 10th edition, presumably because it was never a Top 40 hit (in fact, it only peaked at #75 on the Billboard Hot 100).

Brian W. is correct regarding "Pieces of Ice" by Diana
Ross. The hit's 1983 parent album, "Ross", did indeed
come out on CD here in the U.S. at that time. Label & no.
was RCA 4677. Like the Martin Briley album that I
mentioned in another thread, it was one of the first U.S.
releases on CD. (RCA and PolyGram led the way w/ CD
releases circa 1983-84; don't forget that West Germany
was the other country that manufactured our CDs prior to
'85.) Although I don't have the CD, I've seen a couple of
used copies in my record-store travels over the years,
and due to its rarity, I know it goes for big $$$
whenever it turns up on eBay nowadays (again, just like
the Martin Briley). And sure enough, a check of my old
"Schwann" catalogs from the mid to late '80s also shows
the "Ross" album as being available on CD at the time -
so we can definitely scratch "Pieces of Ice" as well!
Also, didn't Pat recently strike Lindisfarne's 1978 hit,
"Run for Home", from the list??? (For some reason, it's
still on the one above.) He claimed the song's original
parent album, "Back and Fourth", was just re-issued on CD
here in the U.S. for the first time. I've always loved
that album, and would like to track down the CD myself -
but admittedly, I'm having some trouble finding it. (All
the other listings I've run across still show the album
as only being available on CD as an import!) So does a
U.S. CD of that one now exist or
not???

Regarding the Lindisfarne cd "Back And Fourth", I just double checked my cd to be sure it was a domestic cd and it is, issued by Castle Music America with catlog number 72246.
If anyone has the Diana Ross cd "Ross", let me know the running time of "Pieces Of Ice" and I will add it to the next edition of Top 40 Music On CD. I have found the catalog number so it truly was a US issue and belong in the book.
Same for the Martin Briley cd "One Night With A Stranger" if anyone has this cd then pass along the running time of "The Salt In My Tears" and I will add that to the database as well.

I have taken the liberty of removing Pieces Of Ice by Diana Ross and Run For Home by Lindisfarne from my list that started this thread as well as Todd's list which sorted the data by artist. I say this just so there is no confusion for new readers browsing this thread.

Good news for those of us wanting "Pieces of Ice" on CD. All of Diana Ross' RCA albums are being re-released on CD in Japan next week. I just ordered "Ross" for around $16.50 US (though even the cheapest shipping from Japan was about five bucks, and takes around three weeks). But no bonus tracks on most of them, unfortunately. (I was really hoping for the remixes of Eaten Alive and Chain Reaction.)

Anyone know if Johnny Desmond's "Yellow Rose of Texas" or David Carroll's "Melody of Love" have shown up on any import CDs?

After seeing your reply above, Pat, I was finally able to
find a local store that had the U.S. re-issue of "Back
and Fourth" on Castle Music America 72246 listed in their
computer. They told me that since it was in their
database, and was not shown as being out-of-print, they
could special-order a copy for me from their distributor
- and since the label & no. matched the info you gave
above, that's what I had them do...
Well, the CD just came in, and this is what I got: The
one that arrived is actually a U.K. import pressing of
"Back and Fourth" from 1999 on Castle Music ESM CD 811 -
BUT, the back of the jewel case has a new UPC (bar code)
sticker placed over the original U.K. bar code that's
printed on the back insert, and that sticker has the U.S.
bar code w/ the "72246" catalog no. in it! So my question
is this: Is your copy of "Back and Fourth" simply a
stickered U.K. pressing like mine, or a true U.S.
pressing??? The store charged me the $11.98 U.S. list
price for the CD, so it must've come through the domestic
pipeline, as I wasn't about to pay the typical $20-$30
that most import CDs run...
Also, while ordering the "Back and Fourth" CD, I
uncovered some additional info: Although I don't have it,
it seems that in 2000, the Castle Music America label
also released a 2-CD collection on Lindisfarne titled
"Anthology", which also included their top 40 hit, "Run
for Home". (The collection features live versions of
their early to mid '70s hits on Elektra, but the late
'70s and early '80s tunes - including "Run for Home" -
are all the original recordings.) So "Anthology" will
need to be added to your book under "Run for Home" as
well, although it's apparently now out-of-print! Full UPC
code is 602923662220, which I assume makes the catalog
no. "36622"...

80smusicfreak - Yes my "Back And Fouth" cd is also stickered on the back to indicate the US distribution number and yes I have included the "Anthology" cd in my data base as well.

Okay, I found Johnny Desmond's "Yellow Rose of Texas." It's on a US Reader's Digest comp called "A Celebration of American Folk Music," 2001, Sony Music Special Products A4 52392 C-162C (or C-162B, which is what's on the back -- the C-ending is on the spine).
It's mono, and it says "Courtesy of MCA Records under license from Universal Music Enterprises." MCA bought up Coral, the label of the original record, in the 1960s, so it's the right label. So I'm assuming it's the original version. And if it's a re-recording, Reader's Digest will usually say so in the booklet, but no such mention here.
The disc is still available to order from Collector's Choice, but it's really expensive -- about $60 for a 4-disc set.

Because it's now been 2.5 years since Pat originally posted this list here (and Todd was kind enough to re-arrange it by decade), I thought this old thread was worth revisiting, especially for those (like myself) who have yet to subscribe to Pat's database...
Would somebody be kind enough to update the list??? (I nominate Todd, lol.) Just looking at the '80s songs, we know that Wounded Bird has since made the Michael Sembello and Patrick Simmons hits available on CD, and we've also revealed that back in '86, the "American Anthem" soundtrack from which the Andy Taylor hit came was also issued on CD in the U.S. (but is of course long out-of-print!)...
As an aside, I do have Tony Carey's "The First Day of Summer", Eddie Schwartz's "All Our Tomorrows", and Pia Zadora's "The Clapping Song" on CD, but all of those are definitely imports, and I'm not aware of their appearance on any U.S. CDs to date...
However, there are two other likely deletions that we can make from the '80s: Dr. Hook's 1982 hit, "Baby Makes Her Blue Jeans Talk", and Agnetha Faltskog's 1983 hit, "Can't Shake Loose". That is because my old "Schwann" catalogs from the mid '80s show that the original parent albums for both of those hits were indeed issued on CD here in the U.S. back in 1983-84: "Players in the Dark" by Dr. Hook (Casablanca 800 054), and "Wrap Your Arms Around Me" by Agnetha Faltskog (Polydor 813 242). This is also backed up by the web site, www.bsnpubs.com. Of course, both of those CDs would've been pressed in West Germany for the U.S. market, since the U.S. didn't open its first CD pressing plant till '85. I loved "Can't Shake Loose" from the first time I heard it on top 40 radio back in '83, and bought Faltskog's album on cassette immediately; by the late '80s, I'd picked up "Players in the Dark" on cassette as well (still have both to this day) - I don't have either on CD, though, and I imagine those original pressings are quite rare, but they should be added to Pat's database, nevertheless...
In addition, I do have Cliff Richard's 1981 hit, "Give a Little Bit More", on a U.S. CD - but admittedly, it appears to be one of those "gray area" releases. The song was included on 2003's "30 Years of Hits", an excellent 25-track collection of CR's best, topping even 1994's "The Cliff Richard Collection (1976-1994)" on Razor & Tie 2039 (which I have as well). In fact, "30 Years of Hits" features all 10 of CR's U.S. top 40 hits by Pat's standards, including 1959's "Living Doll" and 1964's "It's All in the Game", which are two others that Pat claims in the 10th edition of his book have yet to appear on a U.S. CD. "Give a Little Bit More" runs (3:17) on the CD, just as claimed on the back insert - (2:36) for "Living Doll" and (3:09) for "It's All in the Game". Label & no. of the CD is Powder Blue CD-7844, and "Made in U.S.A." is clearly printed on the back insert, along w/ a UPC (bar) code; the disc itself has a silver playing surface and excellent sound quality, too. (The front booklet lacks any credits or liner notes, though.) And although I obtained my copy through eBay a while back, "30 Years of Hits" is available new directly from Amazon, at a price of $23.98, so Pat (and others) may want to investigate this one further...
