Most of us put together our own custom collections, and one of mine is the complete #1 hits of the 1950s, my own merged Billboard/Cashbox chart. Thanks to Pat's book, I've managed to collect almost all of them in their original mono hit versions, but here are four I've never found in mono on any CD:

Patricia - Perez Predo
Why - Frankie Avalon
The Battle of New Orleans - Johnny Horton
It's Only Make Believe - Conway Twitty

And of course, as recently discussed on BSN, the 45 version of "The Chipmunk Song" is M.I.A. on CD. The 45 used a different vocal take on the first few lines of the song. The tip-off is that, in the first line on the 45, the Chipmunks take a breath after each "Christmas." On all stereo and (E) versions, including the mono version in Hip-O's "Santa's Greatest Hits," the first line is sung through without a breath.

It seems hard to believe that in all these years, the original mix has never appeared on CD anywhere.

I believe "Patricia" in mono can be found on Instrumental Favorites:
Latin Rhythms
on Time-Life R986-12.

"Battle of New Orleans" in mono is on these two:

Classic Country - 1950-1959 ~ Time-Life R808-03

and

Golden Age of American Rock ‘N’ Roll - Country Edition ~ Ace (UK)
CDCHD-845

The mono "It's Only Make Believe" is hard to find, but is on these (now
out-of-print) CDs:

Baby Boomer's Best - Lovin' 50s ~ Priority CDL-9439 (2:10 mono)

Baby Boomer Classics - Lovin' Fifties ~ JCI JCD-3203 (2:10 mono)

Love Me Tender ~ Time-Life TCD-133 (2:12 mono - sl. hiss)

"Battle Of New Orleans" is stereo on my Time-Life R808-03 cd.

"It's Only Make Beleive" is (E) on my copy of Baby Boomer's Best Priority 9439 and is stereo on my copy of
Baby Boomer Classics - Lovin' Fifties as well as Love Me Tender.

I should add here that I elected not to include a number of 80's Priority cd's in Top 40 Music On Compact Disc
including the above mentioned "Baby Boomer's Best" cd because they are absolutely awful sounding cd's that I didn't even wish to acknowledge with a mention in my book. Almost all tracks on these cd's are (E), mastered from vinyl and use the Waring FDS noise reduction process.

Thanks, Mark and everyone. I'll investigate these.

(Now... how about the mono Connie Francis "My Happiness"???) :D

I finally found my mono "Patricia," the original take running 2:18, not the alternate 2:26. It's on the Reader's Digest 4-CD set, "Your Easy Listening Hit Parade of the '40s and '50s." I checked it out from the library, but it's up for auction on Ebay all the time. It's also got the hard-to-find "Moritat - A Theme from "The Three Penny Opera" by Dick Hyman. (Which was also on a recent Eric CD.)

And, as I posted in another thread, I got the mono "My Happiness" on an import CD as well. (Geez, two out of five in five months -- not too bad.)
