I have been unable to track down the original source of several Toni Braxton songs that I hope someone can shed some light on. For instance where does the 3:49 edit of "Another Sad Love Song" that appears on Toni's "Ultimate" cd come from? Ditto for the 4:09 version of "Let It Flow" on the Ultimate cd and the 4:36 edit of "I Love Me Some Him" on the Ultimate cd.

Pat, I checked my TM Century library, and the "Radio Edit" runs 4:11. Is the version on "Ultimate" an edit of the LP Version or a remix? I've seen singles that contain the "Radio Edit," "Remix Radio Edit" and "Smoothed Out Version."

Aaron I don't know which of the three Toni Braxton songs that I mentioned that you are referring to but if you are asking about "Another Sad Love Song", yes it is an edit running 3:49 and not a remix.

Do you happen to have Joe Cocker's "Love Lives on" in your TM Century library? I know the song is on one of their CDs. I find that these CDs rarely show up on ebay, so does anyone know how I can track down a copy of this one?

I'd been combing the Internet for the longest time trying to find a promo CD copy of "Another Sad Love Song" that I was beginning to wonder if one even existed! But I finally did come across some information on the U.S. promo CD:
(LaFace LFPCD-4047)
1) Radio Edit - 4:11
2) Album Version - 4:57
3) Album Instrumental - 4:55
source: http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22Another+Sad+Love+Son g%22+LFPCD-4047&btnG=Google+Search
I still don't have the promo CD, so I can't confirm the above info. But every radio edit I've seen for "Another Sad Love Song" is listed as running 4:11, including all the import CDs. Therefore, my preliminary conclusion is that the 3:49 edit on the Toni Braxton Ultimate CD is "neither the 45 or LP version".
I have no additional information on "I Love Me Some Him" and "Let It Flow", but you can bet your bottom dollar I'll report it when I do! :-)

I e-mailed edtop40 and asked him if he's aware of any radio edits or other versions of "Let It Flow" and "I Love Me Some Him" besides their respective album versions. The short answer is no. He told me both songs appear in their album version form on commercial CD single. I don't believe either song was ever issued on its own promo single release. The reason for this may be because both songs were released only as "B-sides" on commercial singles: "Let It Flow" is the B-side to "You're Makin' Me High" and "I Love Me Some Him" is the flip side to "I Don't Want To".
I compared the 4:09 version of "Let It Flow" from the Ultimate CD to the single and album version running 4:22. The 4:09 version is edited, so at this point I think we can reach the conclusion that it is "neither the 45 or LP version". I also compared the 4:36 version of "I Love Me Some Him" from Ultimate to the single and album version running 5:06. It too is an edit and I think we can once again conclude that this is "neither the 45 or LP version".
Earlier, I spoke of the 3:49 edit of "Another Sad Love Song" on Ultimate and made a preliminary conclusion that it is "neither the 45 or LP version". However, I later got to thinking that this "edit" could possibly be just an early fade of the single version. Edtop40 informs me that the commercial single version, which turns out is the same as the Radio Edit I spoke of earlier, runs 4:14. I'll leave it to someone else to compare the 3:49 and 4:14 versions since I don't yet have a copy of the latter.

Since you revisited the Toni Braxton entry "Another Sad Love Song" Todd, I can report that I have compared the (3:49) edits to the (4:08) edit and the (3:49) edit is not an early fade of the 45 version. The actual running time of the dj cd single version is (4:11) as stated on the cd. So if Edtop40 reads this, could you please retime your cassette single as your time of (4:14) seems a little long.

Regarding "Let It Flow", I do have a promo CD single for it. And as Arista/LaFace/etc. would sometimes do for either a "rush-released" remix promo, or one not originally planned for radio service at all, this CD has no writing/label on it, with a sticker on the jewel case stating the title/artist/name of movie. The inner groove states stock # LFPCD-4124. One track - actual time (4:24).
As for "Another Sad Love Song", here are the particulars from both my two promo CD singles and my commercial CD single; some info is repeated from earlier in this thread, but provides additional details:
-Toni Braxton--"Another Sad Love Song" (LFPCD-4047)
1-Radio Edit (listed & actual 4:11)
2-Album Version (listed 4:57; actual 5:00)
3-Album Instrumental (listed 4:55; actual 5:02)
-Toni Braxton--"Another Sad Love Song" (LFPCD-4053)
1-(Softer Mix) (listed & actual 3:56)
-Toni Braxton--"Another Sad Love Song" (73008-24049-2)
1-Remix Radio Edit (listed 4:40; actual 4:41)
2-Extended Remix (listed 5:27; actual 5:26)
3-Smoothed Out Version (listed 4:20; actual 4:22)
4-Remix Instrumental (listed & actual 5:01)
5-Album Version (listed 5:01; actual 5:00)
This is the first referencing of the "Softer Mix" version I've seen in this thread; perhaps it may prove helpful in identifying the shorter mix that has popped up on some database CDs.

Thanks for the extensive promo CD info, Pat and Jim. I remember being somewhat surprised at the success of "Another Sad Love Song" on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary chart when the song came out because I thought it carried a bit more of an urban sound than one may have been accustomed to hearing on the format at the time. Perhaps the "Softer Mix" on Jim's promo CD single was remixed slightly to accommodate AC stations, much like the electric guitar was often subdued or removed from rock-leaning songs that crossed over to AC during the late '80s to mid-'90s.

The only difference I can hear with the "Softer Mix" is that the instrumentation is literally a little bit softer and less bass-heavy, making the vocals more prominent. It's more of a different EQ adjustment than a truly different mix.

I'll seize this thread to request for info on a particular Toni mix.
It's the "Passion Mix" of "Breathe again". Exclusive to the US cassette single:
"Breathe Again" (Cassingle)
Could someone please confirm if it really is a unique mix?
That wouldn't be the only time some Toni track was only released on cassette tape (not vinyl nor CD).
"You bring the world to me" (Instrumental, & Quiet Storm versions) are also exclusive to this other cassingle:
You Mean The World To Me (Cassingle)

The database currently says that the 4:06 version of "You're Makin' Me High" on Ultimate is a "45 length".
The version of Ultimate on Qobuz lists the track as "Radio Edit", and it does indeed match the "Radio Edit" from the promo CD single.
In other words, it's a real edit, and not just an early fade, as "45 length" would indicate.
It appears that the CD single and vinyl 45 (!) also include the "Radio Edit".
I'd recommend changing the entries that currently say "LP length" to "LP version", and changing the entries that currently say "45 length" to "Single Version" or something to that effect.

Good catch, Ron. I updated the entries from "length" to "version."

I have been unable to find a truly lossless copy of the
4:26 "Radio Mix" of Toni's "Spanish Guitar". The several
radio promo CDs I have containing it all have MP3
compression artifacts.
Can anyone confirm whether the commercial CD singles
containing it are lossless or also transcoded from MP3?

I have no such issues. Mine appears lossless. I dont remember where I got the source, but Toni Braxton has many many comps and various artists comps of the time had it too.
