The 45 version is a remix and has the harmony.

Yes, it is the commercial 45 that has the harmony vocals and this is the version that "Gord's Gold" features.

Really? Were there two 45 mixes? I picked up a stock copy of the 45, and it contains the same single vocal mix heard on the album version. The only place I can find multi-tracked vocals is on Gord's Gold. Gord's Gold also sound like a different reverb unit was used. Was the mono dj 45 different with those extra vocals? Is there a second 45 stock mix? I am comparing with an original Reprise stock 45 and it does not match Gord's Gold. My Reprise stock single matches the typical single voice version heard on most CDs.

There are 45s that have the harmony vocals added.

For those of us that would like to obtain both versions of this song can you please pass along the matrix number of the version with the double tracked vocals? My dry version has matrix number M 17780 S 1A.

Are the stock 45s for this song mono or stereo?

I've always been under the assumption that the entire Gord's Gold album contained remixed/new versions of songs, not their original single/album versions.

Brian, my stock copy is stereo.

Ditto for at least the '70s-era Back To Back Hits reissue on Reprise (GRE 0744.) Its flip side, "Me And Bobby McGee," which was the first single issued from the Sit Down Young Stranger LP, is in mono.

Thanks. But I should have asked, too -- is your copy the remixed version or the LP mix?

It's the same as the LP mix, Brian. No harmony vocal at all. Same with the reissue 45.

Interestingly, the stock 45 has noticeably wider stereo separation than the reissue 45.

My stock copy's label states "From the Reprise Album RS 6392 - Sit Down Young Stranger." The reissue credits the revised If You Could Read My Mind album title. Are there original stock copies with the revised LP title listed on the label?

Yes and no. The double album set "Gord's Gold Vol 1 & 2" did contain some re-recorded material but it was only the songs that Gordon originally recorded earlier in his career before he hit the charts. All of his '70s hit material on the double album is the original version.

Then you have "Gord's Gold Vol 3" which is ALL re-recorded including a redo of "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald."

There hasn't been a Gord's Gold Volume III yet. The 1988 set was Volume II. The 1975 double-LP was the first volume.

While most of the tracks on Volume II were re-recordings, four were the original versions, as listed in the CD liner notes under "production credits from original masters:"

"Make Way (For The Lady)"
"Ghosts Of Cape Horn"
"Baby Step Back"
"It's Worth Believin'"

I've just discovered a mono/stereo promotional copy of this 45 in my collection....having the last 3,000 or so 45's ive aquired in boxes without any organization, i often never know what I have when it isn't filed away properly.... the mono side has the matrix numer M-17780-DJ 1B and the stereo side has M-17780-S 1A (i assume it must be the same promo 45 that you have). I have a stock 45 too and haven't played it in years but it contained the single track vocal version as well.

You're right on all the above, thanks. I should have checked first. I'm getting too old to rely on memory alone!

A few months back Jim A. was kind enough to send me a dub
of his mono promo Reprise 0974. Listed time (3:48) but
actual (3:46).
Unfortunately, I don't have access to the deadwax info
but the mix on Jim's mono side does not match the
reported mono copies above. His mono copy HAS the harmony
vocals, but it is not a fold-down of the stereo harmony
vocal mix. This is a dedicated mix with a LOT more reverb
on his vocal than either the stereo LP or the stereo 45.
The strings are also mixed differently, and they too are
awash with reverb - but different reverb than the
vocal and louder in the mix.

I tried to re-create this mono mix by adding lots of
reverb too the Gord's Gold CD source, but it can't be
done. As soon as I got the vocal reverb close - the
strings reverb didn't match and they weren't nearly loud
enough. Also, in the final verse and chorus the cello is
mixed very prominently.
Very nice mix - the orchestra sounds very lush and full.

I'm usually not a big fan of mono mixes (even when they're dedictated mono mixes, I usually choose the stereo mix), but I have to admit - from reading Mark's description, this one sounds very interesting.

So, just to clarify (or cause more confusion).... were there two different
stereo/mono promos?

I am reasonably sure that Reprise re-serviced this single
with the harmony vocals later on when the LP title
changed.
