I recently bought Lionel Richie Definitive Collection, and I noticed that "Running With The Night" is NOT the 45 version. I also checked this song on Back To Front and it's the exact same version---NOT the 45 version. It seems that an attempt was made to re-create the 45 edit, but they were not successful. To check for yourself, cue in to 3:30 and listen to the bad edit on the guitar solo.
Also, I listened to "All Night Long" from Definitive Collection, and the intro sounds like it's not correctly edited either. I believe they missed a note of the strings, but I haven't pulled out my 45 to check. I also have yet to see if this is the way the song is presented on Back To Front.
If anyone has info, please post!

OK, on "All Night Long," Definitive Collection has the intro edited incorrectly (at 0:13), and there may be another mistake at 3:30 (haven't been able to verify yet). Back To Front has the intro correct, but a wrong edit at 2:46.
Does anyone know if the correct 45 version has appeared on CD yet? What about the correct 45 version of "Running With The Night"?

hey aaron....you are right.........the 45, starting at around the 3:30 mark, is different than the cd "back to front".....the guitar solo/ending is completely different........do you know if that guitar solo is/was on the original lp "can't slow down"???

ok....i just listened to the 45 of "all night long (all night)" versus the cd version from "back to front" and they are identical except the 45 fades out to 4:16 while the cd version runs 0:04 longer to the 4:20 mark......

edtop40, yes, the original lp version of "Running With The Night" is 6:00. The guitar solo on Back To Front is edited, whereas there is no edit on the original 45---it just fades out.
I'll have to actually get out my 45 of "All Night Long," because something definitely sounds different on Back To Front. Did you pay close attention to the horns at the 2:46 mark? If you A/B'd them, you might not have heard the difference, because the song structure is the same.

edtop40, you are absolutely correct on "All Night Long" on Back To Front. It's Definitive Collection that has the wrong edits at 0:13 and 2:46.

A little confused about "All Night Long"...
Is the version on the Hitsville set not the proper
45 edit? Can you point out the incorrect edits if there
are any (and if you have them handy)?

Hitsville is correct. It's Definitive Collection that has the bad edit at 0:13.

Thanks, Aaron!
Lesson: Always look first to the Hitsville box sets!

In my research for Lionel Richie's 45 versions I came to this thread along with
the "Running with the Night" thread. I'm still a bit confused after reading and
wanted to confirm. The 45 version of "All Night Long (“All Night) is correct
on "Back to Front" except for the extra 4 seconds at the end correct? Also,
the "Special Reservice For New Edit" of "Running with the Night" appears on
the Definitive Collection whereas a completely incorrect version appears on
“Back to Front.” So the commercial 45 version has never been released on
CD but the promo 45 version has (on the Definitive Collection).
Thanks!

Sorry for the confusing thread. My posts were not very clear!
"All Night Long" is correct on most CDs containing the 4:16 single version, but the version on Definitive Collection and a handful of other CDs (presumably digital clones of Definitive) have two editing errors. The errors are at 0:13 and 2:46 where the edit point is in the wrong place. (Pat only notes the error at 0:13.)
"Running With The Night" has appeared on CD in the LP version and promo 45 "New Edit." Pat lists this as a "remix" but it's really not. It's a different edit of the LP version. The stock 45 version has not fully appeared on any of the database CDs. One disc in the database says "45 version faded :13 early," which may be the closest you can find. Perhaps it's available on an import, and someone can let us know. Otherwise, it's simple to create using the LP version.

Thanks Aaron. I don't think it's that your posts were not clear. There are just
so many minor details on these tracks that it was a little difficult to decipher.
Thanks for clearing it up!
