I only own a "mono on both sides" promo 45 for this. Like my Whitburn book states for the commercial 45, my promo also shows a listed run time of (2:56) for both sides, and actually runs a second shorter, at (2:55), for both sides. However, all 7 current database CDs for this run between (3:12) and (3:14), so Pat will no doubt have to run this one through his "spectrum analyzer" for a proper conclusion.

The actual LP running time is (3:13) and it actually is a "version" and not a "length".

Nice detective work, Jim and Pat! Now can anyone confirm the commercial 45 run time for "Mighty Clouds of Joy"?

After reviewing the new cd "The Complete Scepter Singles", I had to pull out all of my B.J. Thomas 45's to verify that the correct 45 masters were used for this cd and I discovered that I can no longer detect a difference (other than mono vs stereo mixing) between the 45 of "Mighty Clouds Of Joy" and the LP so I may have to retract my statement above on there being an actual version difference. Can anyone else detect a difference between the 45 and LP appearance of Mighty Clouds Of Joy?

Where do we stand on this song? Other mono versions in the database?

I was sent a dub of the mono single and was able to determine that the mono single features the piano hotter. It can be heard upfront for longer periods of time than the stereo mix (on the stereo mix during the refrain the piano drops down to a very low level into the mix, barely noticable but still there. On the mono mix you can hear the piano at a higher level all into the "Hallelujah part of the refrain) Also the piano remains louder near the end of the song. I don't think the real mono mix has ever been issued on CD.

Pat I think you had it right the first time, I think there is a single "version". I picked up the stock 45 an at least on the copy I have there is a noticable splice at 1:43 which cuts out one of the refrains, probably to make the end of the song sound stronger.

There is an edit on my Scepter Records SCE 12320 45. It is from 1:43 to 2:14 of the lp version. Running time is 2:50 but has the 2:56 listed time.
The fade on the "The Complete Scepter Singles" is 8 seconds sooner than the fade on my 45.

I miss-timed the length of the 45. It is 2:56 with the last 5 seconds barely audible on my crackly 45. But no mistaking the edit.

That Real Gone set should be re-titled the Incomplete
Scepter Singles instead (what a joke).

so can the 45 version be edited from the lp version....it
sound to me like the vinyl 45, when edited, runs longer
than the cd version...
