My commercial 45, which is mono, has a listed time of (6:58), but an actual time of (6:53).

And on a side note, the Database lists (45 version) for all 6:56 range versions. While playing the mono version off of "Can You Dig It" & the stereo version off of "The Best Of Anthology Series", I noticed from 1:21 through 1:40 of the mono version (and more later) congas that don't appear on the stereo version. Were there two 45s with different mixes released in '72?

Another fantastic, albeit sad discovery from a board member! I just took a
listen and I hear the congas on my mono version (from Rhino Billboard Top
Rock'N'Roll Hits 1972) but not on my stereo version (from Anthology).

I would take a guess that there was only one mono version of the 45, which
appeared as "e" on LPs until an edit was made to resemble the 45, and I
don't have access to an "e" version to listen.

So, we need folks with an original single to take a listen to confirm.

Was there ever a radio edit of this? I've never seen one..any promo copies I've ever seen were simply a white-label version of the commercial single (rare for Motown, who'd issued primarily double-A side promos since the mid 60s). Seems like a tough sell for Motown's promo reps to get an almost 7 minute song on the radio.

Since I wasn't around in '72, I'd be curious to know if any stations made in-house edits. I don't remember seeing anyone discuss an official promo edit on the board, nor have I ever heard a shorter version.

I don't remember a shorter single edit for radio. Or home made edits. I've also never seen a promo or stock copy with a stereo A side on this song. (It doesn't mean that there wasn't one, I just never saw one)

The single version was often released as electronically rechanneled stereo.

The stereo single version may have been edited from the full length version specifically for the CD era.

Maybe someone else can confirm.

Anything I heard on the radio in 1972 (when I was 13) was the 6:56 or so 45 version.

WLS/Chicago did--their version ran (3:37). They made an edit at (0:16) that went right to the strings before Edwards' opening "it was the third of September" line, and also cut from the end of the third chorus to the start of the seventh chorus.

To DavidClark:

No, no stereo release has the congas. The first issuance of the stereo (non-conga) version edited down to be close to the single was in the early CD era (maybe by an Inglot).

bumping this up, the database has not yet been updated with the stereo
release lack of bongos, therefor not the 45 version

Well, for years all i ever heard on vinyl was the 45 mix re-channelled on V/A albums or their best-of.
I never even knew there was a true stereo version at all! Until the late 80's a friend showed me the "All Directions" album and the magnum 13+ minute version.. and it was the first i ever heard it in stereo. I was WOW'd.

At least this new discovery explains all the stupid re-channeling all those years. Those who knew, at Motown, who were still around in those years must have known they added something to the single mix.

But, in CD era, I was SO happy when a single edit in STEREO finally came along.
Last night i carefully compared the 45 mix with the stereo mix. I even wanted to see if i could synchronize the missing bongos (yes, they sound like bongos to me, can be congas...whatever)...
But, they are SO low in the mix, that a synch is not possible to make them audible in stereo.
So, i dismiss their existence! Yes, i am turning my back on the mono...i am covering my ears and saying "la-la-la-la-la" i can't hear them! :-)
So there.

As Eeyore would say about it: "thanks for noticing...."
Sigh.

Mark, your story is the same as my discovery of this track in stereo, first the
long LP version, then the stereo edit. I did not notice the missing congas
until it was pointed out to me last month....BIG sigh....

I agree with Mark in thatI do not hear the bongos either so I have not added a 45 version vs LP version comment in the database.

Pat, I believe Mark's comment was sarcastic. I do hear bongos starting at around 1:00 on the stereo version. If you listen especially from 1:30 to 1:40ish, you can hear them clearly on the mono version. They are completely missing from the stereo versions that are currently listed as "45 version."

Versions that run 6:56ish but are in stereo will need a "neither" or "edit of LP version" comment.

Aaron is correct in his "designation" request, as I have been hoping for this
since June.

Oh, Pat...

Sorry for any misunderstanding, Aaron is totally correct as i was dripping with sarcasm.
Facetious at very least.
So i will clarify: Pat, I DO hear the bongos in the mono mix, and they are missing from the stereo mix. The new info boynamedfoo has brought is absolutely correct.
Therefore, unfortunately, any of the stereo edits are TECHNICALLY (see how i stressed that?) something like "edit of LP version to simulate 45 version" or maybe just simply "edit of LP version."
I don't know [sigh] I'll let y'all sort that out.

But, based on what i heard by comparing... the bongo overdubs ONLY appear on the mono 45 mix OR the re-channeled (fake stereo) versions made from that mono mix.

Now, all that are findings that should be shown in the database, for technical accuracy.

For ME, my above humorous statements meant that *I* personally don't care, I'll stick with the stereo mix. To me, the bongo overdubs are pretty low in the over-all mix. And for me, they don't add anything critical to this record..all the critical elements are present in the stereo, hence i nor most folks here ever even noticed they were missing, until this thread where a golden-ear has detected them.
I respect that the producers felt right at that moment that adding those bongos when they were editing down the mono mix might somehow help it be a hit. We'll never know, maybe they did!
All i know is, i wasn't missing them because they overdubbed them way in the background, so I'll stick with my stereo.

But again, for accuracy i must agree that the "45 version" distinction can only apply to the mono mixes that contain the added bongos/percussion.

I have gone back and listened to the mono vs stereo issue and I do detect the bongos now on the 45 version so I have changed all entries in the database to reflect the correct 45 versions. As you might have guessed all the electronic versions are the correct 45 version.
