In Pat's book, he notes that DJ copies of "One On One" run 3:45 and 3:53. I'm guessing that the 3:53 version is the same as the commercial 45, an early fade of the album version. I recently came across this song on a TM Century disc, running 3:42, and it sounds like an edit of the 12" Remix. Is the 3:45 DJ version an edit of the 12" Remix or is it another edit of the LP Version?

Aaron, your guesses are 100% accurate. The 3:45 version is an edit of the 12" single remix.

Ok, it has been determined that the 45 version of Hall & Oates' "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)" and the 3:45 DJ edit of "One on One" are both edits of their respective 12" single remixes. This leads me to ask the following... I notice the 10th edition shows all CD appearances of Hall & Oates' "Your Imagination" as being the "LP mix". Therefore, is the 45 version of this song an edit of its 12" single remix?

Yes, "Your Imagination" is also an edit of the 12" single and I will change the comment in my database from LP mix to LP version since the 45 and LP are really radically different.

The good news is we at least now have the 12" remixes of "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)", "One on One", and "Your Imagination" available as bonus tracks on the recently remastered and expanded editions of Hall & Oates' Private Eyes (BMG Heritage 58615) and H2O (BMG Heritage 58616) CDs.

Boy, this is an old thread!

I was sorting through 10 different CDs with this song, and thought I'd post things here, just for documentation purposes.

The LP and commercial 45 are the same mix, but different
lengths.

The LP length is 4:15, and it runs 95.6 BPM throughout. I have the LP length on three different CDs:
  • RCA's original H20 (copyright 1982, disc appeared in mid-'80s, sound is pretty good but levels are excruciatingly low - this track has about 8 dB of headroom)
  • the 3-CD Legendary set (2002 - sound is very close to H20 but with much more reasonable levels)
  • the 2-CD Ultimate set (2004 - mastered a little bit loud but has more clarity than other two - lower-generation source tapes?)
The 2-CD set Starting All Over Again (1997) has severe speed issues on this track, starting off about 3% too fast and getting faster as the track progresses. It would have the LP length if it ran at the right speed. But it doesn't - avoid.

The 45 length is 3:53, and the versions on CD all run about 95.6 or 95.7 BPM. The 45 length shows up on:
  • RCA's Greatest Hits Rock N Soul Part 1 (copyright 1983; levels a little low with about 5 dB of headroom, but this is a very nice-sounding disc, runs 3:56)
  • RCA's weird Tender Moments compilation (1991; differently EQ'd digital clone of Rock N Soul but clips the peaks and hastens the fade by about 10 seconds - avoid)
  • Razor & Tie's 2-CD Forever '80s (1994, seems to be the same analog transfer as Rock N Soul Part 1)
  • the German collection Looking Back (1991, seems to also use the same analog transfer as Rock N Soul Part 1)
  • Time-Life's Sounds Of The Eighties Vol. 11 1983-1984 (1995, differently-EQ'd digital clone of Looking Back)
  • Time-Life's 2-CD Body Talk Vol. 7 Hearts In Motion (1996, differently EQ'd digital clone of Looking Back)
Aside from the one disc that fades early, all of the above 45 length discs sound pretty good. Personally, I choose Rock N Soul Part 1, but all the others sound really similar.

The 12" is a very different mix, with very exaggerated percussion. The promo 45 is an edit of the 12" mix, and I don't think it's appeared on a CD.

FYI... There are a half dozen database CDs containing Daryl Hall & John Oates' "One on One" that are missing an "LP length" comment.

Promo 45 JB-13421 has a listed time and actual time of 3:45 on one side. Deadwax is PB13421-D with "Sterling" deadwaxed and MR 109059.
The other side has a listed time and actual time of 3:53. Deadwax is PB13421-A-2 with "Masterdisk" deadwaxed and MR 109058.

done it in a long time, so I can't pinpoint the edits off the top of my head.

I just attempted the DJ 45 edit and there appears to be the slightest mix difference that prevents the true DJ 45 version from being recreated from the 12". At about 3:27 of the DJ 45, Daryl repeats the phrase "I don't want no one else". There is an echo on the words "no one" with the second echo louder than the first. On the 12", the first echo is barely audible, with the second one practically non-existent.

Aaron, would you agree?

years since I created my custom edit, and I'm only human :) I may have
made a mistake in saying it can be edited from the 12".

Wow, good ears! I did not catch that when I was creating my edit years ago. Indeed, there is a unique vocal echo on the fadeout of the DJ 45. Did you notice any other differences?
