There are a handful of CDs in the database that run 10 or more seconds shorter than the 45 & LP version. Pat, it might be helpful to note if these are early faded versions or "neither" version.
Also, for the editors, the promo 45 version is just an early fade of the full length LP/45 version.

For Oran "Juice" Jones' "The Rain", the database presently notes that commercial copies are all 5:05. This is probably another instance where the time is based on what is printed on the record label because I come up with a time closer to 5:07. I'll concede it's somewhat difficult to pinpoint the exact time because the thunderous sound effects that fade-in during the intro can be difficult to distinguish from the vinyl noise. Incidentally, the 5:07 time is more in line with most of the song's CD entries in the database.

At what point do you begin the fadeout to replicate the promo?

At 2:52, the fade starts at the spoken "and him" and ends just before the next "I saw you" at exactly 3:08. I'm pretty sure I used the Rhino Hot R&B Hits 1986 as my source.

I just want to check on this because the database says the promo edit ends at 3:14... so is the proper length 3:08 or 3:14?

I think 3:14 is the printed time.

Ah... thanks, Aaron.
I knew you were human, but I doubted you had made a mistake on your timing. :-)
