My vinyl US 45, Mercury 71092, states a run time of 2:25, actually runs 2:24. This is about 0:06 shorter than any US CD's in db. I do not have any of those CD's to check, but the 45 might be a different version, or just has a different pitch or length. Does anybody know?

Bjorn, I don't own the original 45 like you do, but I do have his "Best Of The Mercury Years" CD. If you like, send me a Private Message. (This is an available option in the upper right corner of the Chat Board screen.) Include your e-mail address in your message. I will then send you an e-mail, including an mp3 file of my CD version, for you to research/compare against your 45. In the past, we on this Board have been able to solve MANY song/version mysteries this way.

I also have Ralph Martiere's Best of the Mercury Years CD, which is long out-of-print and very hard to find. If anyone has the 45 and would like me to send me an mp3 of it to make a direct comparison to the CD, send me a private message and I'll give you my e-mail address.

Todd, I have already sent an mp3 to Oddbjorn, to compare against his original 45, and I'm sure he will soon be reporting his findings to us.

Thanks to Jim for the mp3 of the CD-version. I have done a compare and the difference in length (0:06) is due to a longer fade (the CD has a lo-o-ong fade compared to the 45). In my ears the rest of the song seems to be identical. However, to verify that the rest of the song really IS identical, I will do a mp3 of the single and send it over to Todd, so he can do a comapare with a suitable software (I have done it manually).

Oddbjorn was gratious enough to send me a 45 dub, and I too conclude the song on Best of the Mercury Years is the single, only with the cymbal fade held longer before fade-out.

Wow, it took three different countries getting involved here, to get to the bottom of this one! Thanks Oddbjorn, David and Todd! I always thought, that for a 1957 recording, that the song had exceptionally amazing fidelity!
