My 8th Edition doesn't indicate LP Version or 45 Version next to Depeche Mode's "People Are People." I'm familiar with two different versions that both run between 3:40 and 3:50. They are pretty much the same, except one fades out and one ends cold with those "bells." I'm pretty sure the one that fades out was not just an early fade of the version that ends cold.

Does anyone know which version is the "45 Version"? Was there a difference between the 45 and LP versions?

Is the LP Version the one that fades out?

Just for fun I put the 3:42 (single) and 3:52 (album) versions into the multitrack to compare and can confirm they are identical right up until the two chord strike at about 3:34 in the long version.

If you grab the section between 3:10 and 3:19 (with the "why should it be" sung right after "what makes a man") from the beat before "Help me understand" and loop it twice and fade on the word "understand" you have made the single version. (No, you don't get much of the second loop in before it fades.)

Your fade should actually start about 3:28 and run to about 3:44.

The LP or "bells" version ends with what we used to call a "Cold / Fade." In other words, the song basically comes to an end but the sfx & synth fade out.

The single version is a straight fade as explained above.

Now I understand why Pat was saying the DJ 45 and "LP" are the
same. He was considering the compilation album People Are
People
to be the parent album, which is what is stated on the 45
label. This album does include the 45 version of "People Are People,"
but the non-compilation parent album is Some Great
Reward
. Both the compilation and full length album came out within
a couple months of each other.
