Is there another mix on the promo CD single?

I have the LP mix on Wilson Phillips (SBK K2-93745, 1990, runs 4:32). The LP mix opens with a keyboard-only intro for 8 seconds.

I found a different mix on Starland Music Presents Rockin' USA (Warner Special Products OPCD-4556, 1994, runs 4:31). This different mix opens with an airy-sounding electric guitar intro for 8 seconds, replacing the keyboards from the LP mix. Overall, it sounds toughened-up, compared to the LP, and to my ears it sounds like a single mix. There wasn't a 45 at the time, so I can't check.

Anyone have a promo CD single?

Ron, Pat already does have some promo CD single timing information in the database for this song. But it really isn't very descriptive, so in this case I will go ahead and provide the full details to you here. But if full promo CD single details WERE already in the database, I just wouldn't feel right in "undercutting" Pat, and providing your requested details here, for free, on the Message Board. Just a quick heads up, my good friend, because it seems I'm usually the one that's been able to help you out with most of your recent promo CD single queries, as you progress through your excellent, 1990 "project". But if details aren't already found in the database, I'll always be happy to help you out, sir.

Wilson Phillips-"Impulsive" (DPRO-05359)
1-Single Edit (listed 3:53; actual 3:55)
2-Album Version Edit (listed 4:01; actual 4:00)
3-AOR Mix (listed 4:33; actual 4:32)
4-Album Version (listed 4:34; actual 4:32)

Well, THAT seems unexpected!

My Rockin' USA compilation has the AOR mix from the CD single, and I didn't know those other two shorter edits even existed!

Hunting down the hit versions is getting more and more tedious as I work my way through the '80s and '90s. At some point, it got a lot more complicated than just "LP version" and "45 version", and I'd put that point somewhere around 1989. A little bit after Michael Jackson's Bad album, but before Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 album. (Oh, sure, blame the Jacksons for everything...)

I think most of my annoyance is from having a bunch of different versions on a promo CD single, but not having a "hit" version on a 45 single to accompany it. Was De La Soul's "Me Myself And I" the first top 40 hit to not have a 7" single? (Ignoring "Rapper's Delight"...) That would be the summer of 1989, and that's right about where my gigantic project started to bog down. I'm probably going to hack through 1991, and since I have the '80s done (a first pass at it, anyway), I'm probably going to work through 1979, 1978, etc., until the music doesn't interest me all that much anymore.

My hat is off to those of you that have attempted to hunt down all these hit versions. I can see how this would be a huge drain on your time and $!

As I stumble through 1991, feel free to ask me to find edit points for any '80s tracks. From about 1984 onward, I kept notes for any homemade edits I did to mimic the 45s. I'll be happy to share whatever I've got.

Anyone know if the single edit found on the promo CD single is an edit of the AOR mix?

Todd, the "single edit" is simply an early fade of the "AOR mix".

Now there are some words I never thought I'd see in the same sentence..."Wilson Phillips" and "AOR Mix". ?????

Adult Oriented Rock mix, maybe? ;)

The 'single edit' is available on Napster on their
Greatest Hits .

Yes. And even when Tommy Boy entered into an arrangement with Collectables to issue 45s in the 1990s, "Me Myself and I" never made it to a 45.

The running time of this song is listed on the back
cover of the single as 4:33 (Track 1, AOR Mix). I just
timed my commercial Cassette Single of "Impulsive"
twice and came up with a running time of 4:27 each
time. (I don't think there was a Vinyl 45 in the US
for it, so I'm going by the Cassingle). Can anyone
else here with the single confirm the 4:27 time? The
reason I ask is because I know there's always been
talk of how cassette players tend to play slightly
faster than 45's/CD's, so I'd like to know if anyone
else here came up with any different times. If so,
it's possible my player (Sony Walknman) may be off a
little.

It should also be noted that the original album
version mentioned earlier with the keyboard intro was
later replaced with the AOR Mix that was used on the
commercial single. My copy of the self-titled "Wilson
Phillips" album has the AOR Mix. It runs about 4:32 on
there.

Also, the title of "Single Edit" that appears on the
promo CD Single may be misleading in that some people
might assume it was the version released on the actual
commercial single, when in reality it's just an early
fade of the AOR/commercial single mix.

The 2016 Caroline Records 2-CD reissue of their debut
album features the original album version, AOR Mix,
Single Edit, and Album Version Edit.

Thanks for the info, I had no idea it was
re-released in a deluxe edition. I thought
maybe they were going to wait until the
30th anniversary of the album's release
next year, but apparently they decided to
do it earlier.

You're welcome. Looks like they were a year late for the
25th anniversary. For an album that was as massive as it
was, the 2016 reissue seems to have gone unnoticed by a
lot of people. It's a nice package and upgrade from the
original 1990 release. Nice mastering from Andy Pearce
and Matt Wortham, too.

Thanks for the info on this Crapfromthepast. I'm the
buyer who bought this single along with one from Mint
Condition from you.

Later I bought the Caroline 2cd issue which I had no
idea was out since I don't follow pop as much and have
been expanding my collection recently in that direction.
Thanks for the heads up Bellenger1981. Got it before it
went out of print like those BBR's that went quick.
