The 5:16 LP version is readily available:- Sounds Of The '90s - 1991 (Time-Life, 2001; best-sounding of the bunch)
- Rockin' USA (Starland Music/Warner Special Products, 1994)
- Hot Hits Vol. 4
- In The Blood (Radioactive, 1991?)
I'm having trouble figuring out what the single version is.
There's a version on Now 1990 (Virgin EMI Polygram UK, 1993) that runs 3:32 and is an early fade of the LP version (a 24-beat fade from 3:20-3:32).
There's also a different version on Mega Dance Party '92 (Columbia Germany 471345 2, 1992), which runs 3:46. It's labelled 7" Version on the CD itself. This version is the same as the LP version until 3:15, after which the vocal ad libs differ from the LP version until the fade (a 24-beat fade from 3:32-3:45). It appears that you can't recreate this version from the LP version.
jimct - Do you have the promo CD single? (Sorry to bother you yet again...)

No problem, sir. We exclusively played track one from the promo CD single (CD45-1230) at our station. Here are the particulars:
1-(Non-described Version) (listed 3:49; actual 3:48)
2-C'est Wot Mix (listed & actual 5:38)
3-Def 12" Mix (listed 6:50; actual 6:51)
There was also a commercial CD single issued for this song (RARDS-53992):
1-Def 12" Mix (listed & actual 6:50)
2-Red Zone Mix (listed & actual 4:42)
3-Reprise (listed 1:33; actual 1:31)
4-Vocal Dub (listed & actual 5:50)
5-The Eclipse Mix (listed 4:12; actual 4:10)
6-Trak Mix (listed & actual 3:05)

Thanks, again! The early '90s would be hopelessly lost without you!

I can confirm that the "hit" version cannot be re-created from the LP version, because of the different vocals near the end. I've got a copy of the British 45, which was my first choice when there was no American 45 in the early 1990s.

For anyone looking for the 45 version of "I've Been Thinking About You" on CD, your best bet to find it is on the various artist compilation Alive in the 90's (Platinum Disc Corporation 26969). The CD is still in print and can be purchased for a low price at most major retail websites.

As I recall, the cassette single was different from the radio edit. I tossed mine when I got a promo CD, but if I'm not mistaken the cassette just faded out around 3:30 or so. Anyone have the cassette & can confirm?

Back in 2007, Brian wrote (in a different thread):
Quote:
Not in the US (commercially), but I have the UK CD single, which does have what's called The Umberto Mix, running about 3:58.
Track listing:
1. A Better Love (The Umberto Mix)
2. I've Been Thinking About You (Acoustic)
3. A Better Love (Acoustic)
4. I've Been Thinking About You (7")
The 7" version of "Thinking About You" here has the drums on the intro, which are missing from the promo CD version. Not sure if the 45/cassingle had the introductory drums or not. |

I post this only because I noticed that the TM Century library version of "Thinking" is also missing the opening 3 drum beats, and starts on the downbeat. By 1991, TM was using digital clones of the promo CDs (maybe with level and/or EQ changes), so it's consistent with Brian's findings.

This sounds like the version on my U.K. 7" single (Anxious ANX 14), which runs 3:47. This is also the version that was played on the radio in my old stomping grounds of Eastern Pa. The U.K. 45 does have the three opening drumbeats.

Not sure if this is listed in the database, but I thought you'd like to know that the 7" version of "I've Been Thinking About You" turns up on a domestic CD - a 2-CD set called Sounds Of The '90s (Time-Life M18635 72435-25949-2-4 314541724-2 - I miss their simpler numbering schemes, released 2000).
It starts with the three opening drum beats and runs 3:48, and matches the description of the UK 7" above. Sound is pretty good, too.
