The sole CD appearance of "Nadia's Theme" on Hard to Find Orchestral Instrumentals II (ERIC 11518-2) presents this song at its 45 version length, but it is not the exact same edit that appears on the 45. For this CD, the producers created a smoother-sounding 45 edit by going back to the LP version and making a slightly different edit, one beat before the obvious and rather jarring edit that occurs at 1:50 on the 45. Otherwise, this is the 45 version, same mix and everything.

I'll leave it up to Pat to decide how this re-created 45 version should be listed in the database.

Sounds like it should be listed as "neither 45 or lp version" to me.

I like the way Pat has now updated the comment in the database, though I might have taken it a step further and explained that this isn't the "true" 45 version due to a slightly different edit at 1:50. Nonetheless, the new database comment suffices.

It's such a shame that this is the only CD source for this song, that I know of. Though I'd be surprised if it hadn't shown up on a Reader's Digest comp at some point, sometime since the CD era began.

There is at least one more CD source for the song. I have it on a Japanese various artist compilation CD. I can listen to it at 1:50, but since I don't have the Eric CD, I'm not really sure what to listen to or compare.

BTW, how long is the album version? I wasn't aware this 45 was edited!

Gordon, can you give me the title/label/year of release of that CD? Not sure how long the album version runs. But if the Japanese CD came out before 2003, it couldn't use the same version as Eric.

I think what you're listing for at 1:50 is a bad edit... but it wouldn't be there if it's the album version.

Gordon, if your Japanese CD has the true 45 version, you'll hear an obvious edit at the 1:50 mark, immediately before the strings come in. The re-edited version has the edit one beat, or about 3/4 of a second, earlier.

Can't help with the LP length, sorry. I just know that the 45 was created by editing the LP version.

I'll send you a dub of my 45.

Hi I listened to my CD and the 45 dub that John supplied, and they are identical, with an edit at 1:50. It wasn't really as sloppy an edit as I thought it would be but there's definitely an edit spot there.

<Gordon, can you give me the title/label/year of release of that CD?>

Hi All,

I can chime in a little here as i was involved in the making of the Eric CD "Hard To Find Orchestral Instrumentals Vol 2".
First, since it was not a "HTF 45's on cd" volume, it was not the intention that every track be the exact 45 version, even though this one is almost identical.
The edit is still located exactly at 1:50 on this CD, but it is not a splice like the original 45, it is a quick cross-fade to accomplish the same result.
Tom Daly & Bill Buster felt the splice always sounded too abrupt.
Edison: in the 70's it wasn't edited to make it shorter, it was edited to make it longer.
Many may recall this recording originally ran just under 2:00 and was titled "Cotton's Dream" and was first released on a soundtrack album for "Bless The Beasts And Children" in '72. Then later used for "The Young And The Restless".
When they wanted a full single version for releasing it as "Nadia's Theme" they extended it by simply splicing it so the middle portion repeated again.
Tom worked very hard to get it as close as possible but with the quick cross-fade it sounds more musically realistic than the splice.
Sorry to the "45 version" purists, but this disc wasn't intended for that.

BTW - why is this HUGE hit on so few Cd's? I'll tell ya!
It WAS available for licensing, but the rights owners would only allow the entire Nadia's Theme album to be licensed, it was all or nothing. You can imagine many would be put off by this requirement.
I don't know if that has since changed, but Bill had to make a lot of phone calls and convincing, and they finally allowed him to include it on the Orchestrals CD. Thanks, Bill!
