VAN HALEN "Finish What Ya Started" commercial 45(WB 7-27746-A) is "Remix Version".This is stated "Remix" on the record label. I compared the 45 with the track from the CD "ou812"(WB 25732-2). The 45 has the overdub at "1:35".I could not find out the other remix point. Please listen to the 45 & LP version of this tune.

Interesting, abagon. I'm going to search for an mp3 dub of the 45 and compare it to the OU812 CD. Once I arrive at a conclusion, I'll post my findings here (unless someone else beats me to it).

I correct the remix point. There is the overdub at 1:36 (NOT 1:35).I'm sorry.

Ok, I've gotten around to comparing the "Finish What Ya Started" commercial 45 (courtesy of Ed) to the song as it appears on Van Halen's OU812 CD (Warner Brothers 25732) and I'll be darned... There is indeed a cymbal clash on the 45 at the 1:35 mark not present on the CD! There are other cymbal overdubs found elsewhere on the 45, such as at the 2:40, 2:52, 2:56, 3:04, and 3:12 marks, that aren't on the CD either.

One more thing... The CD intro opens with several drum stick taps followed by a countoff. I don't hear the drum stick taps on the 45 intro, though it's possible they could be buried in the sea of vinyl noise present on my 45 dub. You have very keen ears, abagon. I have serious doubts I would've ever caught these details on my own!

Sorry, I had forgotten to look into that, Ed... The version you sent me from the promo CD single is identical to the CD/LP version and therefore does not match the vinyl 45. Do you have the track listing and run times for the promo CD single?

Ed, here's what I have for it:

Van Halen-"Finish What Ya Started" (PRO-CD-3240)
1-Remix (listed 4:20; actual 4:21)

Ed, since both Abagon's 45 and my promo CD single both state "Remix", either there were two different promo CD singles issued for this (which would be very unusual for 1988), or perhaps your CD-R dub did not, in fact, come from the promo CD single, but from some other source.

I'm very glad to post for this song ,ed ,Todd & Jim. I'd like to find the strikes from the others again!
I appreciate to learn the other overdubs, You also have very keen ears,Todd.

I just found that my 45 includes "the drum stick tap" thanks to Todd.
This actual 45 running time is (4:20), The listed time is "4:20"

FWIW, I have a promo 45 with a picture sleeve of "Finish What Ya Started". Both sides of the record are listed as 4:20 and marked "Remix", apparently the same as abagon's commerical 45 and Jim's promo CD single. The sleeve does not indicate any timing or version information.

The matrix number on both sides of the 45 is 7-27746-SH1. Additional numbers scrawled into the trail-off vinyl (including one preceded by a triangle and one preceded by a symbol shaped like a "Q") suggest to me that this record was pressed at Allied, a plant which was, at the time, owned by Warner Music, and generally handled Warner's pressing work for the western half of the country. (Despite that, I'm pretty sure I actually picked this 45 up at a used record store in Boston.)

I also have a vinyl LP of "OU812", and can report that "Finish What Ya Started" has a listed time there of 4:20 as well. As a side note, I don't think I'd ever noticed this before (this isn't an album I've listened to a lot), but the LP does not list the songs anywhere on the cover. My copy is a Columbia House Record Club pressing (W1-25732) which, going by the trail-off markings, was pressed by club owner Columbia/CBS, not by Warner Music.

I was surprised to find this song on a US commercial 3-inch CD single. It is the same remix found on the vinyl single.

Bumping up this thread post a real remix, a "Keyboard Remix" that got some
airplay in 1988/89.

Any idea where this comes from? It sounds like what you'd expect from an extended 12" mix from that era, but there are no extended mixes listed anywhere on Discogs.

From the VH Reddit:

"The only mystery I know of is the story of WB wanting to test the waters on if
the public would care for a more pop dance oriented version of Finish What
You Started. Someone with access to the master tapes remixed a version and
tested it out in California and it got shot down quick. I’ve had it on bootlegs
since the early 90s but no official release."

"Ah, the notorious FWYS DJ Remix. If memory serves, in 1988 AR guys from
WB contacted a few radio DJs out of Los Angeles (who also happened to be
musicians) and they made the remix without consulting the band. Some LA DJs
got dub plates and I think the remix was used a couple of times in a
MuchMusic ad in Canada before VH management raised a stink and it got
pulled. So yeah, it's not an official release by the band."
