Great tune. Prefer the DJ edit myself (which fortunately is gettable on CD since you can't make the DJ 45 from the stock 45).

I actually found this on promo vinyl today at an antique shop. Near mint condition. Times to something like 4:30 on the label.

FYI I believe that the short version has always had a nasty hum on it. 50 or 60 cycles.

Oh really? I know the pitch is raised a tad. The LP version does sound crisper, but I find the "edit" is more to the point.

That's why I like single edit better, because they hit home in terms of delivery. I know a lot of people hate the edit for "Beginnings" by Chicago for example. But I don't know, I think for oldies or gold stations, it gets all the good parts, and delivers it quickly.

But I'll have to listen for the hum on my single. I don't engage a sub-sonic filter on my turntable, and my PSBs go down to a respectable 31 Hz so I should hear it.

My main beef with the 45 edit of Chicago's "Beginnings" is it completely eliminates the entire jam session featuring the Peter Cetera led "only the beginning" verse repeated over and over. To me, that's the catchiest part of the song!

The dj version says (edit) next to the title.   What differs from the commercial version?

The commercial 45 included the full 5:23 version. The promo has a 4:08 edit.

Yes, that I knew. Just wondering if the 4:08 edit has unique audio.

Oh, nope, it's just a straight edit, as far as I remember.

Not quite. The stock 45/LP version has a vocal over where the edit
takes place, so you can’t extract the DJ 45 from the stock version.

Doug, you're right. I thought I had made my own promo edit of this, but it actually comes from one of the database CDs that has the promo 45 version.

I tried once making a straight edit back in the 90s and it didn't come out too badly. But I'm glad I found the promo a decade ago.

I am lucky enough to own the DJ Promo, and have had my
copy for years.

Last night, I made my own edit of the song using a 10-second segment of the promo 45 where the unique audio is. All the CD copies I have this on are very hissy sounding. I'm not sure if it's a high generation tape or improper Dolby settings, but the promo 45 does not sound like this.

One radio station in Toronto tried editing into the sax solo, so that they could bypass the issue of the improvised note overtop the edit point.

Kinda worked.

This song recharted in 2005 on Billboard's AC chart. Was
this the original version or a remix? If the former, why
did the song rechart? If the latter, why was it redone?

In our most recent AC book (1961-2006) we stated that the version that charted in 2005 was a reissue of the original version on Rhino (which issued a
Greatest Hits album by Ambrosia). However, I just looked at the charts and it states (2004 Remix) on Warner. So now I'm thinking that it was indeed the
remix that charted. I'll have to investigate this one some more and if we ever get around to updating the AC book, I can make the correction.
