The studio mono mix from the 45 is what I'm seeking. The version on Rhino's "From Pumps to Pompadour" uses the live version.

Drew, to my knowledge the 45 was the only place that Blue Sky released that studio version in 1982, since the entire parent LP "Live It Up" was live. In fact, when I tried to locate that original LP on CD two years ago, all I could find were bootleg, vinyl dub transfers for it. I believe that the Rhino CD you cite is the only place to find ANY version of that medley on a legitimate CD. It's amazing to me that you managed to even find the live version on that Rhino V/A CD! Sadly, I would rate the chances of that 45 version EVER seeing the light of day on CD, given how hard it has been to locate ANY version of it to date, at just about zero, Drew. Wish I had better news...

Thanks for the info, Jim. Kinda surprising that Rhino would overlook that version, but perhaps it was Sony's decision?

I own the promo 45 with both versions. The studio side sure sounds to me like it's a mono mix of the live side with an early fade & no crowd noise mixed in.
Probably it was a fake live recording to begin with.
Was the commercial 45 the stereo "live", the mono "studio", both, or a stereo "studio"?

The "Live It Up" album was recorded February 4-5, 1982, at the Paradise Theatre in Boston, so it's not a "fake live" recording. Looks like the CD version was finally released this past April, so it should be easy to get.
MTV played the heck out of the live "Animals Medley" video back in 1982 and that is what I consider to be the "hit" version. And while I don't remember hearing it on the radio, it did manage to peak at #28 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock Tracks chart in the summer of 1982.
