I have three of the four CDs listed in the database on which "What Is Love?" by The Playmates appears in stereo: Golden Classics (Collectables), Choice Voices! (Collectors' Choice), and Teen Time Vol. 1 (Eric). On the latter two CDs the opening guitar note heard on the Collectables CD does not appear. I only have this song in mono on a Canadian re-issue 45, which has the opening guitar note. Does anyone have the original 45 and could that person kindly check whether the first thing heard on the 45 is a guitar note?

Paul, yes, the original Roulette 45 begins with a guitar pluck.

Good catch, Paul. My next question is, did "What Is Love?" appear on a vinyl LP release while the song was a hit and, if so, did the song contain the opening guitar note on the LP?

What Is Love first appeared on the 1959 Roulette LP Rock n' Roll Bandstand, and then turned up on the 1961 Roulette LP Wait For Me. I don't know if either one has the note.
The earliest LP with What Is Love that I have came out in 1965. My mono 20 All Time No. 1 Hits does have the song's first note.
