While doing some research on Coldplay's "Viva La Vida", a recent Billboard #1 single, I came across some information regarding the promo CD single release:
1) Radio Edit – 3:45
2) Full Album Version – 4:01
Does anyone have this promo single who can verify the run times?

Wow! Somebody still does promo CD's?
My favorite tune of 2008.
Sorry for the sarcasm, but since we are no longer a reporter to Radio and Records service is scarce.

Can the radio edit be created from the album version, and if so, where are the edits?

Yeah, the joys of being in a non BDS-monitored market. Once upon a time if a PD was willing to work at it, you could get pretty good service in most any market, but not anymore. Isn't the company formerly known as TM-Century the only remaining provider of currents to radio (other than a couple of download sites)?

I haven't made an a/b comparison but I believe the key (only?) difference is that the radio edit cuts cold after the final vocal line ("the world..."), while the album has a few bars of synths. Can anyone confirm?
As for promo service, I know Promo Only remains active, and Top Hits USA was still around last I checked. I actually had luck getting promo service from most labels, with my last station, an LPFM in an unrated market. But CD service declined as some labels only seviced digitally, via Play MPE, newmusicserver, etc.

According to the database, the radio edit of "Viva La Vida" now officially appears on the Grammy Nominees 2009 CD (Grammy Recordings/Rhino 517633).

Still getting my Top Hits USA service. I hadn't actually considered that the rest of the world's service on CD might be slowing down...
Always happy to check what's on there, if you ever need...

The current active music services (mostly for DJ's only) are:
Prime Cuts (TM Studios)
Promo Only
Top Hits U.S.A.
ERG Music (U.S. and Canada)
Many of the services now offer Mp3 DVD's if you choose to subscribe to those instead of their regular audio CD's/CD-r's/

The former PD of our Hot AC station gave me his newmusicserver login...I'll use it to grab some currents. Their selection is spotty though...often there are gaps in an artist's repertoire, also what's posted there is not always the correct "radio" version.

When I was in radio in the early 90s, the Canadian labels used to send compilation promo CDs. We had Warner, Sony, BMG, and A&M. I know the middle two are merged now. So first off, did they send the same ones to American stations back then?
Secondly, I take it that none of these CDs are available now? I wouldn't want my only hits to come from HitDiscs from TM, only because they took liberties with edits in the past. But is the only option now available is to download?

I think Aaron has mentioned before that since the early 90's or so, TM has utilized Promo CD singles from the labels.
I subscribe to TM's Prime Cuts, and they will sometimes take a radio edit and clean it up further. Mostly Eminem tracks, Hip Hop etc. But, they also had an 'Xtra Clean' version of "Hollaback Girl" a couple years ago. The 'Xtra Clean' version muted the sh from that 4 letter sh word.
